WHAT IS A RESEARCH PROBLEM?

 A research problem , in general, refers to some difficulty which a researcher

experiences in the context of either theoretical or practical situation and wants
to obtain a solution for the same.

 A research problem is a general statement that identifies the problem or

situation to be studied.

 The research problem serve as the foundation of a research study. If it is well

formulated , one can expect a good study to follow.

3
SELECTING THE PROBLEM

The following points may be observed in selecting a research problem:

 Too narrow or too vague problems should be avoided.

 The subject selected for research should be familiar and feasible.

 The importance of the subject, skills required, the cost involved and the time factor
should be considered .

 The selection of the problem must be preceded by a preliminary study .

 An average researcher must not choose Controversial topics.

Subject which is overdone should not be chosen.

4

NECESSITY OF DEFINING A PROBLEM

Defining a research problem is a pre-requisite for any study and is step of the highest
importance as it provides the framework for reporting the results .

It may facilitate questions like -

 What data are to be collected ?

 What characteristics of data are relevant and need to be studied ?

 What relations are to be explored ?

 What techniques are to be used for the purpose ?

5
RULES FOR DEFINING A RESEARCH PROBLEM

 Technical terms should be clearly defined.

 Basic assumptions should be stated.

 The criteria for the selection should be provided.

 Suitability of the time period and sources of data available must be considered.

 The scope of the investigation or the limits must be mentioned.

 Subject which is overdone should not be chosen.

6
TECHNIQUES INVOLVED IN DEFINING A PROBLEM

The technique for the purpose involves the following steps:

 At the beginning , statement of a problem should be in a general way, then

narrow it down and phrase it in operational terms .

 Understanding the nature of the problem through discussion .

 Surveying the available literature .

 Developing the ideas through discussion .

 Rephrasing the research problem.

7
FEATURES OF A RESEARCH PROBLEM

 Researcher should be able to state the problem clearly and concisely .

 It should be a great interest to the researcher .

 The problem should be significant .

 It should be properly defined .

 Researcher should be able to obtain the required information .

8

 The point of research is to find some answers .

SOURCES OF PRBOLEM INVESTIGATION

 Deductions from theory

 Interdisciplinary perspectives

 Interviewing practitioners

 Personal experience

 Relevant literature

9
EXAMPLE

The general problem may be,’’ What is the effect of X on student

learning ?”

 Would a different type of assignment enhance student

understanding?

 Would a strict attendance policy result in better test scores?

 Would more time spent in cooperative learning groups help

students understand concepts at a higher level?
