PUNJAB CULTURE AND TRADITION
PUNJAB
• The name Punjab is made of two words Punj (Five) + Aab (Water)
i.e. land of five rivers

• These five rivers of Punjab are Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, and
Jhelum. Only Sutlej, Ravi and Beas rivers flow in today’s
Punjab. The other two rivers are now in the state of Punjab,
situated in Pakistan

• The Punjab State is divided into three regions: Majha, Doaba and
Malwa.
LANGUAGE

• Punjabi, the official language of the state, is the tenth most widely
spoken language in the world. It is also the fourth most spoken
language in Asia.

• Punjabi is written in Gurumukhi script. Besides Punjabi, Hindi,


Urdu and the universally acclaimed English are
the languages that are spoken in Punjab.
Food

• Punjabi tradition is very rich when it comes to food

•  Punjabi is famous for its speciality in spices and cuisines. With


profuse amount of ghee on the chapattis, the food here is luscious.
The drink(lassi) is served here as welcoming drink which is enriched
with huge amount of milk.

• Some recipes of Punjab are chicken tikka, mint paratha, lassi, chole-


Bhature, dal Makhani, Amritsari fish, Paneer etc
DRESSES

• Punjab's famous dress for women is salwar kameez and


for men kurta chadra.

• Lehenge,Ghagra,Anatkalli,Kurta pajamas, sherwani are


some dresses of punjab.
DANCES 

• Punjab is very rich in terms of dance. Punjab has many


types of folkal dances, among them Bhangra and Giddha
being the most famous. These days, many non-Punjabis are
also getting into Punjab's folkal dances, as you occasionally
see a European or Chinese in various Bhangra competions.
These non-Punjabis have simply made Punjabi dance a part
of their own culture as well.
