FUNCTI N

Concepts of Functions

OBJECTIVES:
a. represent real life situations using functions;
b. evaluate function, and
c. perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of
functions.
Which of the following is/are not FUNCTION?

A
DOMAIN is the RANGE is the
set of inputs. set of outputs.

D = {1,2,3,4} R = {3,4,5,6}

A = { (1,3), (2,4), (3,5), (4,6) }

set of inputs. set of outputs.

D = {0,1,2,-2} R = {0,1,4}

B = { (0,0), (1,1), (2,4), (-2,4) }

Represents Function
Problem 1. Betty and Kris are best friends. They
decided to have a part time income. They buy beads
and other materials in Divisoria and make bracelets to
sell to their friends. Their starting capital is worth Php
1000 which can make 100 pieces of bracelets. If they
sell if for Php20 each, how much is their profit?
Represents Function
To represents the amount of profit (P),

 n for the number of pieces of bracelets made

 Php 1000 constant number for the capital.

The equation for this situation is represented by P = 20n -1000.

Therefore, the profit is;

Function Notation
 Functions are described by using
formulas or function notations.

 The domain stands as the set of

inputs and range as the set of
outputs is function of f. This is a
function notation f(x) read as “f of
x”.
Evaluating Function
 substitute every x (independent variable)
in the function rule y = f(x) (dependent
variable) with the given replacement
value, then simplify the resulting
numerical expression.
Evaluating Function

x -3 0 2 5
f(x)

So utions: if x = -3 if x = 0

Evaluating Function

x -3 0 2 5
f(x) -12 9

So utions: if x = 2 if x = 5

Evaluating Function

x = x+1
  x = -x

OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS

 Functions are like real numbers which can be
performed by addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division.
The operations on functions are defined as follows:

The product of f and g, denoted f *g

The difference of f and g, denoted f - g

The quotient of f and g, denoted f g
