Definition of Typhus

Typhus (typhoid) or typhoid fever is a disease that occurs due to

infection with Salmonella typhi bacteria which is spread through
contaminated food and drink. This disease, which is common in
developing countries and experienced by children, can endanger lives
if not handled properly and quickly.
Causes of Typhus

The main cause of this disease is Salmonella Thypi bacteria. This type of bacteria is
also directly related to Salmonellosis which causes an infection in the digestive
system that is worse than typhus.

This disease is contagious. Salmonella Thypi can be transmitted through
contaminated food and drink. Exposure to bacteria in food or drinks can occur
when a person does not maintain hand hygiene or consumes food that is cleaned
using water contaminated with Salmonella Thypi bacteria. Likewise with drinks.
Make sure you always consume drinks with the optimal level of maturity.
Risk Factors for Typhus
Several factors can increase a person's risk of developing typhus, including:
– Poor sanitation.
– Not cleaning hands before eating, or not washing food cleanly.
– Eating vegetables that use fertilizers from infected human feces.
– Consuming contaminated milk or dairy products.
– Using a toilet that has been contaminated with bacteria.
– Having oral sex with those who carry the bacteria Salmonella typhii.
Symptoms of Typhus

Typhoid symptoms generally begin 1 to 3 weeks after the body is

infected with features such as high fever, diarrhea or constipation,
headaches, and abdominal pain. This condition can worsen within a
few weeks.
Diagnosis of Typhus

Diagnosis of typhus can be made by analyzing a sample of a person's

blood, stool, or urine in a laboratory. In addition to these
examinations, an accurate diagnosis of typhus can also be done
through a bone marrow aspiration examination, although this is very
rarely done.
Typhus Treatment

The most effective way to treat typhus is to immediately provide

antibiotic therapy. In addition, fever-lowering drugs can also be given
to lower body temperature. Treatment for typhus is carried out in a
hospital, but if the symptoms are still mild and detected early, then the
treatment can be done at home.
Complications of Typhus

Typhus can cause complications if not treated properly. Bleeding or

the formation of a hole in the intestine is a serious complication of
typhus. Then, there is inflammation of the heart muscle, inflammation
of the lining of the heart, inflammation of the lungs, inflammation of
the pancreas, infection of the kidneys, to bladder infections.
Prevention of Typhus

Prevention that can be done is by vaccination. In Indonesia, the typhoid vaccine is

the recommended immunization by the government, although this vaccine is not yet
included in the mandatory category. Typhoid vaccine is given to children over two
years of age and is repeated every three years. Typhoid immunization in Indonesia
itself is given in the form of injections for toddlers and in oral form for children
over six years of age.
As with other vaccines, the typhoid vaccine does not provide 100 percent
protection. Children who have been immunized against typhoid are still susceptible
to infection, but the level of infection experienced by children who have been
vaccinated will not be as severe as those who have not been vaccinated at all.
