Personal
Development
Personal Development
A process in which the person
reflect upon themselves,
understand who they are, accept
what they discover about
themselves and learn (or unlearn)
new sets of values, attitudes,
behaviour and thinking skills to
reach their fullest potential as
human beings.
Imagine
yourself
looking at the
mirror.

What do
you see?

Is it your actual
self or ideal self?
Strengths
and
Weaknesses
Strengths
• Internal attributes that are
helpful to the organization
or humans to achieve their
objectives.
• Capacity to establish
mature relationships with
others, emotional
independence and ability to
demonstrate responsible
behaviors.
Weakness
• Internal attributes that
are harmful to the
organization or human to
achieve their goals.
Do you know anyone
like these?
Walking with
head down.
Not making eye
contact when
talking
Saying negative
things about
others.
Speaking very
loudly.
Excessive
boasting about
their
achievements.
Teasing others.
Signs of Low
self-eSteem
1. Walking with their head
down.
Teens who feel that they are not
worthy find it very hard to make
eye contact when communicating.
2.Not making eye contact
when talking
This is usually a physical
expression of shame and
embarrassment.
3. Using negative “I am”
statements
use phrases such as “I am useless”,
“I never get it right”, “I could never
do that” or “my family would be
better off without me” are examples
of someone expressing negative
beliefs about who they are.
4. Teasing, name calling, or
saying negative things about
others.
Teenagers who feel bad
about themselves often find
negative things about others.
5. Excessive boasting about
their achievements or
appearance
Teenagers seeking to fight
feelings of worthlessness try
to convince themselves and
others the reverse by
continually talking about
how good looking they are
6. Speaking very loudly and
aggressively
Teenagers who feel insignificant or
worthless believe that others see them
as unimportant too, to counteract
these feelings, they will try to verbally
dominate communications to seek
attention or recognition.
7. Evading social
interactions.

When the teenagers feel they are

bound to be rejected, they will avoid
situations that will reinforce this
beliefs.
8. Constantly apologizing

This is associated with feelings of

guilt.
What is the cause of
having a low self-
esteem?
How to overcome
it?
Knowing Oneself

Self
is the union of elements
namely: body, thoughts, feelings
or emotions and sensations that
constitute the individuality and
identity of a person.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
• Abraham Maslow first
introduced his concept of
a hierarchy of needs in his
1943 paper "A Theory of
Human Motivation“
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Personal
Effectiveness
PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS
• a branch of the self-help movement dealing
with success, goals, and related concepts.

Talents
are needed to be identified and then
developed to be used in a particular
subject area
Experience
includes knowledge and skills that
we acquire in the process of
cognitive and practical activities
Knowledge is required for setting goals,
defining an action plan to achieve them
and risk assessment

Skills also determine whether real

actions are performed in accordance
with the plan.
Determination

• It allows you to focus only on achieving a

specific goal without being distracted by
less important things or spontaneous
desires. It may be developed with the
help of self-discipline exercise.
Self-confidence

• It appears in the process of personal

development, as a result of getting
aware of yourself, your actions and their
consequences
Persistence
• It makes you keep moving forward
regardless of emerging obstacles –
problems, laziness, bad emotional state.
Managing stress

• It helps combat stress that arises in

daily life from the environment and
other people.
Problem-solving skills

• They help cope with the problems

encountered with a lack of experience.
Creativity
• It allows you to find extraordinary ways
to carry out a specific action that no
one has tried to use.
Generating ideas

• It helps you achieve goals using new,

original, unconventional ideas. Idea is a
mental image of an object formed by
the human mind, which can be changed
before being implemented in the real
world.
Developing
the
Whole Person
Have you seen or encountered
some people whose age is not
parallel to their heights?
Why are there individuals
whose cognitive abilities don’t
jibe with their age?
Is it normal if an individual
thinks ahead of his/her age
level or vice versa?
What is holistic development?
• a process of self- actualization and learning
that combines an individual's mental, physical,
social, emotional and spiritual growth.
Mind and Body Dualism of Descartes

•  philosophical theory based on the idea of

opposing concepts, especially the theory that
human beings are made up of two
independent constituents, the body and the
mind or soul.

Development

weight, facial appearance, and quality of skin,
hair and descriptions of body areas such as
your neck, chest, waist, legs.

reason and solve problems, your capacity to
learn and create, your general amount of
knowledge, your specific areas of knowledge,
wisdom you have acquired, and insights you
have.

and happen in a person
Social

with other individuals or group individuals.
