DEVELOPING
RESEARCH TOPIC

Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic

RESEARCH TOPIC
 subject or issue that a researcher is interested
in when conducting research (Allen, 2017)
 general questions about relations among
variables, or characteristics of the
phenomenon which a researchers needs to
undertake (Birion, et al. 2005)
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
STEPS IN DEVELOPING
RESEARCH TOPIC
1. Choose a broad topic

2. Do a preliminary research

3. Define the problem

4. Refine the question

Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
DEVELOPING RESEARCH TOPIC
Choose a broad topic
 interesting

 significant

 relevant to your field

Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic

DEVELOPING RESEARCH TOPIC
Do a preliminary research
 read articles, journals, and related research studies
 find out how other researchers gathered their data,
what research instruments were used, how the
data were analyzed, and what important findings
they shared
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
DEVELOPING RESEARCH TOPIC
Define the problem
 list some questions or problems that you want to
research
 narrow down the topic into feasible and
manageable research questions
 limit the population, place or period
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
DEVELOPING RESEARCH TOPIC
Refine the question
 evaluate the questions formulated

 “What specific questions should you ask?”

 “How should you gather your data sufficient to

answer the questions?”

POSSIBLE SOURCES OF RESEARCH
TOPICS
 A feeling of discomfort like during recitation or in
making projects
 Issues that bug you. Associate them with related
issues, or enduring issues.
 Fields of interest or specialization or event from
related fields
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
POSSIBLE SOURCES OF RESEARCH
TOPICS
 Existing problems in the classroom/school which
one wants to solve are good sources of research
problems
 Existing needs of the community or society
 Literatures or published research articles, either
online or print
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
POSSIBLE SOURCES OF RESEARCH
TOPICS
 A daily experience of a person that requires
further inquiry especially if improvements are
desired
A procedure that requires technologically
advanced equipment which needs to function
properly
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
SELECTING RESEARCH TOPIC
 It should be something new or different from
what has already been written about.
 It must be original.
 It must be stimulating intellectual curiosity.
 It should be modest for a beginner to be carried
out within a limited period of time.
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
SELECTING RESEARCH TOPIC

 It should be clear, not ambiguous.

 It should be specific, not general.

 It should lead to empirical data.

 It should not be developed using a single source.

CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING
RESEARCH TOPIC
Ability
 capacity to do something
 “Do you have sufficient academic
preparation which will enable you to deal
with your prospective topic?”
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic
CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING

Interest
 encourage you to continue pursuing it

 appealing to the readers

CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING
RESEARCH TOPIC
Relevance
 considered important in people’s daily lives

 something that your research will offer to

the society
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Developing Research Topic

Ethical Considerations
 all activities are acceptable

 legal and morally right

RESEARCH TITLE

Practical Research 2 Week 3 Research Title

GUIDELINES IN FORMULATION OF
RESEARCH TITLE
 Use an accurate description of the subject and

scope of the study instead of using general terms.

 Do not use abbreviations except for commonly

known ones like DNA and ICT.

Practical Research 2 Week 3 Research Title
GUIDELINES IN FORMULATION OF
RESEARCH TITLE
 Do not include words like “The study of,”

“Analysis of,” “An investigation of” or similar

construction as these would only lengthen the title.

 Include the dependent and independent variables.

Practical Research 2 Week 3 Research Title
GUIDELINES IN FORMULATION OF
RESEARCH TITLE
 Be mindful of the proper use of grammar and
punctuation.
 Capitalize all nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives,
adverbs as well as the first letter of the first and
last words.
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Research Title
GUIDELINES IN FORMULATION OF
RESEARCH TITLE
 State in a declarative form, although you may
also see titles in question form from time to time.
 The year the study has been conducted should
not be indicated unless it is a historical study.
 Use current terminology.
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Research Title
GUIDELINES IN FORMULATION OF
RESEARCH TITLE
 Depending on the institutional requirements, 5 to
15 words are sufficient to describe the research
study.
 Use the common name instead of chemical
formula (e.g., Ammonium instead of NH4)
Practical Research 2 Week 3 Research Title
GUIDELINES IN FORMULATION OF
RESEARCH TITLE
 Write and italicize full scientific names.
 Make sure to reflect the tone of the paper. An
academic research paper has title which is not
casual, or informal, or does not contain humor.
 If the title contains more than one line, it should
be written in inverted pyramid.
