LEVEL OF PERCEPTION OF

THIRD YEAR CRIMINOLOGY

STUDENTS ON THE LAW
ENFORCEMENT IN JOLO
PERTAINING TO THE
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE
LOCAL IATF
ACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Covid-19 is a serious global infectious disease outbreak with
thousands of cases and deaths worldwide. It is part of a family of viruses
called corona virus that infect both animal and people. This particular virus is believed
to be one organized in China at the end of 2019, in the city of Wuhan, which has 11
million residents. In the past two decades’ corona virus outbreak has caused global
concern, for Covid-19 can cause symptoms very similar to the flu-fever and a dry
cough, fatigue, pains and nasal congestion. Severe cases can lead to serious respiratory
disease and even pneumonia. Those most at risk are elderly or people with underlying
medical issues, such as heart problems or diabetes (source).
The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly affected the operational landscape of
policing. The police along with fire and rescue first responders have been on the
frontlines of response, tending to medical emergencies and managing
emergencies and managing the social consequences of COVID-19, while at the
same time providing safety and reassurance to their communities. The risk of
exposure to Covid-19 is high for first responders, and some law enforcement
officers have already succumbed to disease. Stay-at-home orders have also
changed people’s routines, impacting patterns of crime, disorder, traffic
incidents, and other events to which officers routinely respond. Because of these
considerable changes, the pandemic has significantly impacted law enforcement
agencies and their operations.
The group decided to conduct a study on the law enforcement in Jolo pertaining
to the implementation of the local IATF based on the aforementioned literatures.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The research study aims to find out the law enforcement in Jolo
pertaining to the implementation of the local IATF.
Specifically, it will answer the following queries:
1. What is the demographic profile of the third-year criminology students in terms of
gender, age, and residence?
2. What is the level of perception of the third-year criminology students on the law
enforcement in Jolo pertaining to the implementation of the local IATF?
3. Is there a significant difference on the level of perception of the of the third-year
criminology students on the law enforcement in Jolo
pertaining to the implementation of the local IATF when they are
grouped according to gender, age, and residence?
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
THEORY BASE
•This study is anchored on the Home Rule Theory presented by
Alviar (2018).
• In this fundamental theory of police service, the policemen are
regarded as servants of the community, who rely for the efficiency of
their functions upon the express needs of the people.
• Policemen are civil servants whose duty is the preservation of
public peace and security.
• In the modern concept of police service, the policemen are
regarded as the first line of defense of the criminal justice system, an
organ of crime prevention.
•The public look at the policemen as more effective in the absence of
crime.
METHODOLOGY
Method Used
• The study will avail the descriptive survey research design.
Descriptive because it will only describe the data that will be gathered in
the survey. According to Adanza (1999), surveys will allow the researcher
to gather limited data on an otherwise very large population.

Sources of Data
• The primary source of data is the third-year criminology students who are officially
enrolled at NDJC for School Year 2021 – 2022.
DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT
• The survey questionnaire used is self-developed. It is composed of two (2) parts.
Part I is the demographic profile of the third-year criminology students which
include their name (optional), gender, age, and residence. Part II is composed of ten
(10) items wherein each focus on the level of perception of the third-year
criminology students on the law enforcement in Jolo pertaining to the
implementation of the local IATF. It has five (5) levels to choose from which range
from very positive perception to very negative perception.

Sampling Technique
• The research study utilizes the total population of the third-year criminology
students as respondents of the study. Hence, there is no need to use elaborate
sampling technique in choosing the respondents of the study.
PROCEDURE OF THE STUDY
• The group started by looking for a researchable title. After settling
on the title, the researchers consulted the thesis adviser and some of their instructors on the
possible problem to work on. Upon getting approval of the thesis adviser on the statement of the
problem, the group started looking for related literatures to support the conduct of the study. The
items to be included in the survey questionnaire will come from the literatures gathered and on the
suggestions of our instructors.

Statistical Treatment
The following statistical tools are used to analyze the data Collected.
• Problem 1 will use frequency and percentage since the data are summarized data only. Problem
2 will use arithmetic weighted mean. Problem 3 will use Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to
determine if there is a significant difference on the level of perception of the third-year
criminology students on the law enforcement in Jolo pertaining to the implementation of the
local IATF when they are grouped according to gender, age, and residence.

• Table 2 presents the level of perception of the third-year criminology students on the law enforcement in Jolo pertaining to the

implementation of the local IATF.

•It can be gleaned from the table that the respondents indicated very positive perception in only three (3) statements and these are; civilians

were advised by the policemen not to go out during a lockdown declaration (mean = 4.86), and policemen advised to apprehend anybody

celebrating any occasion without observing social distancing (mean= 4.60). The rests of the statements showed the respondents indicated

positive perception and among these are; the policemen assigned in a certain area check those without mask and shield inside the motor

tricycle (mean = 4.25); and policemen conducts the checking of commuters on the physical distancing inside a vehicle being observed (mean

= 4.20). The average weighted mean of 4.20 confirms that the third-year criminology students have positive perception on the law

enforcement in Jolo pertaining to the implementation of the local IATF.

• The result clearly implies that the third-year criminology students looked at the implementation of the local IATF with a positive attitude.
Table 3.1 t –test for Gender

Table 3.1 and Table 3.2 presents the significant difference on the

level of perception of the third-year criminology students on the

law enforcement in Jolo pertaining to the implementation of the

local IATF when they are grouped according to gender, age, and

residence. The t-test will be used for gender since there are only

two (2) categories.

Table 3.2 ANOVA for Age and Residence

Table 3.2 presents the result on the significant difference on the

level of perception of the third-year criminology students on
the law enforcement in Jolo pertaining to the implementation
of the local IATF when they are grouped according to age and
residence.
The result in Table 3.2 showed that the F ratio of 4.93
for age and the F ratio of 3.69 for residence is greater than the
sig value of 0.008 for age and 0.057 for residence. It means
that the null hypothesis is accepted.
There is no significant difference on the level of
perception of the third-year criminology students on the law
enforcement in Jolo pertaining to
the implementation of the local IATF when they are grouped
according to age and residence.
The result also implies that regardless of age and
residence, the perception is the same towards the law
enforcement in Jolo pertaining to the implementation of the
local IATF
Conclusion
The following is concluded based on the findings of the study:
Male students outnumber the female students among the third-year criminology students and a
good number of them are in the right age in their present year level.
The third-year criminology students’ perception towards the law enforcement in Jolo pertaining to
the implementation of the local IATF may be positive, however, it needs to be enhanced further for
them to fully grasp what the law enforcers are doing in the name of service.
Profile of the third-year criminology students are not determinants towards the law enforcement
in Jolo pertaining to the implementation of the local IATF.
Recommendation
The following is recommended based on the findings of the study:

Future researchers on the same topic should include the effect of the law enforcement pertaining
to the implementation of the local IATF.

The law enforcers should do their best to make the residence of Jolo understand what they are
doing to avoid misunderstanding.

The local IATF should present a clear guideline on the Implementation of the health protocols
not only to the law enforcers but also the residence of Jolo.
