What are
modals?
Modal verbs are used with
other verbs to express
various things such as
ability, obligation, and
possibility.
The most commonly used
modals are: can, could, may,
might, should, ought to,
must, have to, will, shall,
and would.
This time, let’s go over
the common everyday
modals and look at
some examples.
1. CAN shows
ability:
1. Nicole can sing
beautifully.
2. Leah can
communicate well.
2. CAN shows
permission:
Can I use your laptop?
Can I borrow your
pencil?
3. CAN shows
possibility:
Driving under the influence
of alcohol can cause
accidents.
Deforestation can cause a
flood.
3. COULD expresses
possibility:
1. The roof could collapse if they
don’t do repairs immediately.
2. If we already have the
vaccine, face to face class could
start soon.
4. MAY expresses
permission:
May I borrow your
umbrella?
May I talk to you for a
little while?
5. MIGHT expresses
possibility:
I might move to Davao
next year.
She might tell her
secret soon.
6. SHOULD is used for
giving advice

graduation.
7. OUGHT TO is used to offer
logical conclusion

8. MUST expresses strong
obligation
