Drum Brake
Or Internal Expanding Shoe Brake

Construction
• An internal expanding shoe brake consists of two
shoes as shown in figure.
• The outer surface of the shoes are linked with some
friction material to increase the coefficient of friction
and to prevent wearing away of the metal.
• Each shoe is pivoted at one end about a fixed
fulcrum and made to contact a cam at the other end.

Working
• When brake is applied, the cam rotates, So that shoes are pushed
outwards against the rim of the drum.
• The friction between the shoes and the drum produces the braking
torque and hence reduces the speed of the drum.
• The shoes are normally held in position by a spring as shown in
figure.
• The encloses the entire mechanism to keep out dust and noisture.

• When wet, the braking grip reduces considerably.

Disc Brake

Construction
• Car Disc brake system are made up of the rotor, brake
pads, pistons and caliper.
• Caliper is housing that fits over the rotor and holds the
brake pads and pistons, as well as contains ducting for
fluid.

Working
• When the brake pedal is pressed, the high
pressure fluid from the master cylinder
pushes the piston inside.
• The piston pushes the brake pad against
rotating disc.
• As the inner brake pad touches rotor, the
fluid pressure exerts further force and the
caliper moves inward and pulls outward
brake pad towards the rotating disc and it
touches disc.
• Now both the brake pads are pushes the
rotating disc so that a large amount of
friction is generated in between the pads
and rotating disc and slows down the
vehicle and finally stops.

Drumstyle
and Disc Brake
Disc Brake Drum Brake
1 Simple in design and construction. Not so simple in design and construction.
2 Disc brakes weigh less. Drum brakes will weigh more.
3 Friction surfaces are directly exposed to Friction surfaces are not directly exposed to
atmospheric cooled air. atmosphere so cooling is less effective.
4 Very easy to replace friction pad. The brake lining have to be either riveted or fixed with
adhesives to brake shoes.
5 They have better water recovery. In wet condition, water gets into shoe causing the
linings to loose frictional contact.
6 Initial cost is high. Initial cost is low.
7 Poor parking brake performance. They make excellent parking brakes.
8 They have self adjusting ability. These need either manual or automatic brake
adjustment.
9 Frictional area of pads is very less. Frictional area of shoes is about 4 times that of disc
brakes. Therefore, the pressure intensity required is
less.
