What is Science?
It is derived from the Latin word
‘knowledge’ (scientia),
“systematic collection of data relating to
the observable universe and its
constituent parts”

Basically, it is a wide pursuit of scientific

knowledge by using different methods,
techniques, experimentation, analysis, etc.

2
What is Environmental Science?
It brings together almost all (if not all) fields of
sciences into an interdisciplinary study;
“understanding how natural and man-
made processes interact with one another
and how it affects the various biomes of
Earth, our environment”
This involves the concern with the physical,
chemical, and biological characteristics of the
surroundings in which organisms live.

3
Two main sub-groupings
Life sciences (like biology); and earth
sciences (like geology).

NOTE: Environmental sciences also

compares present-day phenomena
(meteorology) to the conditions on the past
(paleoclimatology), to better understand
and predict environmental changes.

4
Purpose of Environmental Sciences

FACT
Earth and its environment is constantly
changing at spatial and temporal scales.
And because environmental changes can
have profound consequences for human
societies and economies, we need to
understand how it works.

5
A Focus on Environmental Change
By its nature, therefore, environmental science is
interdisciplinary and it includes two activities;
• The first one is descriptive. This activity includes the studies of
the ranges and distributions of individual species.
• The second one is analytical, which includes the studies of the
factors influencing those distributions, and of the ways in
which they may alter in response to environmental change.

Understanding the Reasons of Environmental Change
 Environmental changes encompass portions of earth’s system with
vastness and complexities that are yet to be entirely recognized and
comprehended. In like manner, species go extinct even those that
are not yet officially discovered or recognized.
In relation, according to National Geographic, extinction of species is
essential because it unlocks doors of chances for new species to arise.

 Years ago, when scientific observing approaches were unavailable

or weren’t utilized, occurrence of environmental changes are
possible. Correspondingly, the commercial fisheries operations put
many marines at serious threats including reduction of some whale
species. Without ecological fisheries practices, the impacts to
marine mammals as well as their environment will not be reduced –
and more species may be unintentionally injured or killed.

 Environment changes naturally, so as human impacts
the environment. It has changed beyond the normal
ways as result to the essential inseparable relationship of
nature and humanity. This relationship either falls in two
outcomes, to destroy or to intervene.
In the same manner, there can be a case of vegetation
change in countryside zones that have become prone to
drought. Plants will suffer more from water scarcity
especially that it can’t move from one place to another. Yet
with better understanding with the effect of
environmental change or with recurrent droughts,
adaptation is possible which allows plant to survive and
reproduce.

 Environmental changes may be extremely
rapid, and its importance may not be
realized until it is too late to conduct
scientific monitoring and establish a
baseline. In situations where animal
populations collapse after a deadly disease
outbreak.
In connection, an author in Science, Daszak,
argued that governments must invest in
efforts to curb deforestation and the wildlife
trade. Additionally, must monitor, prevent and
control new virus outbreaks from wildlife and
livestock to reduce threats of future
pandemics.

Environmental Science is Intrinsically Political
Not just the pursuit of environmental science is intrinsically political,
but at times, it is highly controversial.

It is important to emphasize a further point about this as a subjective

and value-laden activity, and that there are different attempts of usage
the Scientists have done in order to really better understand their work
by devoting copious resources.

There are different views and perspectives on what environmental science should
contain. Some people would go further and argue that environmental science
contains an ethical and moral, as well as a political, dimension, while others
disagree, arguing instead that (environmental) science should be free of subjective
influences, but should focus purely on the collection and communication of robust,
verifiable data.

BRUNEI - Prevention
Annual awareness campaigns are
initiated to educate and raise the
public’s awareness on VAW.
Training for personnel, on the front
line dealing with any domestic
violence issues, are constantly
conducted by government agencies
and NGOs.
