What is Science?
It is derived from the Latin word
‘knowledge’ (scientia),
“systematic collection of data relating to
the observable universe and its
constituent parts”
2
What is Environmental Science?
It brings together almost all (if not all) fields of
sciences into an interdisciplinary study;
“understanding how natural and man-
made processes interact with one another
and how it affects the various biomes of
Earth, our environment”
This involves the concern with the physical,
chemical, and biological characteristics of the
surroundings in which organisms live.
3
Two main sub-groupings
Life sciences (like biology); and earth
sciences (like geology).
4
Purpose of Environmental Sciences
FACT
Earth and its environment is constantly
changing at spatial and temporal scales.
And because environmental changes can
have profound consequences for human
societies and economies, we need to
understand how it works.
5
A Focus on Environmental Change
By its nature, therefore, environmental science is
interdisciplinary and it includes two activities;
• The first one is descriptive. This activity includes the studies of
the ranges and distributions of individual species.
• The second one is analytical, which includes the studies of the
factors influencing those distributions, and of the ways in
which they may alter in response to environmental change.
