musical culture, and
its music is distinctive
despite tremendous
influences from China.

influences can presently
be found in the
existence of Koreanized-
Chinese music called
tang-ak

•The Korean term
tang-ak literally
means music from
T'ang Dynasty
China.
Korean traditional
music can be roughly
divided into two
major categories:
Chong-ak;
which means music
for the ruling class
Sog-ak
music for the
common people
• Yayue- an elegant
music which includes
ritual and ceremonial
court music
•Suyue-popular music
•Huyue-foreign music
•A-ak-elegant
vocal and
instrumental

performer and
accompanied by
barrel-shaped

• Kayagum is
often compared
with Japanese
Koto, but it is
quite different

• It should
be placed
on the lap
of its
player and
its tail on
the floor,
KAYAGUM

• Kayagum
is played
with bare
fingers.

made trumpet
attached to the
wooden tube.
