Electrical Energy
Consumption
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

Estimate the electrical energy consumption cost

of different appliances at home.
Determining the electrical energy consumption of
different appliances and devices we are utilizing
nowadays.
Think of this!
How does Philippines get its electricity?
Philippine Energy Consumption
The Philippines is in the Pacific Ring of Fire and thus has a high geothermal
potential. In terms of electricity generation, 41.4% of the electricity demand is met
by geothermal energy, 28% by coal, 11.4% by hydro, 15% by natural gas and
0.1% by wind, solar and biofuel. In terms of installed capacity for power generation
Hydro is 63.2%, 35.1% is geothermal , 1.1% is biomass and 0.6% by wind and
0.1% solar.

Power and Energy Consumption

P = IV Which is applied to any electrical system.

Applying Ohm's law

P = IV = I(IR) = I2R P = IV = (V/R)V = V2/R

Power and Energy Consumption
How are currents and resistances related?

Battery 1 produces a potential difference V and is connected

to a 5-W lightbulb. Battery 2 produces a potential difference
V and is connected to a 10-W lightbulb.

a. Which Battery supplies more current?

b. Which lightbulb has the greater resistance?

Power and Energy Consumption

Reasoning and Discussion

P = IV I = P/V
a. Which Battery supplies more current?
Power and Energy Consumption

Reasoning and Discussion

P= V^2/R
b. Which lightbulb has the greater resistance?
Power and Energy Consumption

Facts Presents!
• The filament of an incandescent light bulb is
basically a resistor inside a sealed, evacuated tube.
The filament gets so hot that it glows, just like the
heating coil on a stove or the coils in a space heater.
• The power dissipated in the filament determines the
brightness of the light bulb. The higher the power,
the brighter the bulb.
Power and Energy Consumption

Brightness of the Lights

The circuit shown below has two identical lightbulbs (1 and 2) connected in series
with a battery. The bulbs are equally bright, as expected. A third identical light
bulb (3) is disconnected from its socket and is not part of the circuit.
Power and Energy Consumption

Brightness of the Lights

Suppose you put the 3rd lightbulb into the empty socket, so all three
are connected to the battery.
Power and Energy Consumption

Reasoning and Discussion

Does the brightness of bulb 1 increase, decrease, or stay the same?

Power and Energy Consumption
How electric consumers measures the electric energy
consumption?
To do this, they use a convenient unit for measuring electric
energy called the kilowatt-hour.
Kilowatt is 1000 W, or equivalently, 1000 J/s.
An hour is 3600 sec.
kilowatt-hour =3.6 million joules of energy 1 kWh = (1000 J/s)(3600 s) = 3.6 x 106 J
The figure below shows the type of meter used to measure the
electrical energy consumption of a household, as well as the typical
bill.

A. B.
Power and Energy Consumption
Sample Calculation:
A holiday goose is cooked in an electric oven for 4 hours. Let’s assume that
the oven draws a 20 A of current which is operated in a 220 Volts and uses
electric energy that costs ₱8.7497 per kWh. How much does it cost to cook
your goose?

₱8.0per kWh
Power and Energy Consumption
Sample Calculation:
1. Calculate power delivered to the P = VI
P= (20 A)(220V)
oven. P=4400 Watts or 4.4 kW

2. Multiply the power by the time to ΔPE = P(Δt) or E= P(t)

determine the total energy supplied to the ΔPE = (4.4 kW)(4 hrs.)
stove during the 4 hours cooking time. ΔPE =17.6kWh

3. Multiply by the cost per kilowatt- cost= energy used x rate

hour to find the total cost of cooking the cost = (17.6kWh)(₱ 8.0 per kWh)
goose. cost=140.8 Php
