INTACH
● The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is a Non-Profit NGO
registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
● INTACH was founded in 1984 in New Delhi with the vision to create a membership
organization to stimulate and spearhead heritage awareness and conservation in India.
● Today INTACH is recognized as one of the world’s largest heritage organizations, with
over 190 Chapters across the Country.
● In the past 31 years INTACH has pioneered the conservation and preservation of not just
our natural and built heritage but intangible heritage as well.
● Headquartered in New Delhi, it operates through various divisions such as Architectural
Heritage, Natural Heritage, Material Heritage, Intangible Cultural Heritage, Heritage
Education and Communication Services (HECS), Crafts and Community Cell, Chapters,
INTACH Heritage Academy, Heritage Tourism, Listing Cell and Library, Archives and
Documentation Centre
INTACH HISTORY
● 1984 INTACH was founded.
● 1984 Project Ganga was launched.
● 1984 INTACH's first newsletter was printed.
● 1984 INTACH sets up the Art Heritage (AH) division.
● 1984 INTACH set up Natural Resource division.
● 1985 Lucknow Conservation Centre was established as INTACH's first conservation centre.
● 1987 First listing (Shekhawati) was completed.
● 1989 Orissa was the first state to finish listing.
● 1990 INTACH Art Conservation Centre at New Delhi was established.
● 1993 INTACH Chitrakala Parishath Art Conservation Centre was established at Bangalore.
● 1995 ICI (Indian Conservation Institute) Orissa Art Conservation Centre at Bhubaneshwar and ICI
Art Conservation Centre at Rampur were established.
● 1996 ICI Meharangarh Art Conservation Centre was established at Jodhpur.
● 1997 NTACH's Head Offices' new building at 71, LodhIi Estate, New Delhi was completed.
● 1998 INTACH Heritage Education and Communication service (HECS) was established.
● 1999 INTACH's national website, www.intach.org, was launched.
● 2000 Mural painting conservation research and training centre at Trissur was established.

INTACH’S CODE OF ETHICS
1. The image that the public has of INTACH is important for its long-term survival and sustenance.
Public perception of the image is determined by the ethical standards that every one of its
Members follows in order to achieve the objectives of the organization. It demands that every
Member shall:
● cherish and protect our common heritage
● care for the conservation of the local environment
● spread concern and a sense of belonging amongst the local community
● respect our own culture and that of others
● encourage creative expression and inspire young minds to develop secular and cultural values
● Uphold INTACH’s goal and mission to conserve heritage

2. INTACH’s mission to conserve heritage is based on the belief that living in harmony with heritage
enhances the quality of life, and is the duty of every citizen of India as laid down in the
Constitution of India.
3. We need to protect our heritage to bequeath it to the younger generations, to enjoy and enable
them to comprehend in depth Indian history and culture.

METHODOLOGY OF LISTING

CRITERIA FOR LISTING BUILT (ARCHITECTURAL) HERITAGE:

The following three key concepts need to be understood to determine whether a property is worthy of
listing:

● Historic significance
● Historic integrity
● Historic context

One or more of these concepts needs to be applicable to a building to make it worthy of listing.

Listing work comprises two phases:

1. Background research
2. Field work
