While globalization has increased interconnection, human variations remain visible through cultural, social, and political identities. Cultures are shaped by both forces of change and tradition. Socially, stratification systems like caste, class, estate, and slavery have historically divided people based on attributes assigned at birth or achieved. Politically, the world comprises distinct countries each with their own system of governance, and people affiliate along national identities.
