Social Science and its
Importance
Social Science as a discipline studies
the society and the manner in which
people behave and influence the world
around us. The uttermost goal of social
science is to answer different questions
and find solutions to problems of the
society to improve human condition
despite cultural, social and political
differences.

Cultural
Diversity
Culture has the capacity to bond the
members of a society together, but it is
also a source differences that exist
between people in society and between
society in the globe due to diversity in
language, dress and traditions, food
preference, the way societies organize
themselves, in their shared conception of
morality, and in the ways they interact
with their environment, and etc.

Nationality and
Ethnicity
Both concepts are capable of
informing an individual’s behavior
and habits due to a set of cultural
norms that each category provides.

Nationalit
y Nationality is the identity that is
tied to being part of a nation or
country - a “group of people who
share the same history, traditions,
and language” and who inhabits a
particular territory delineated by a
political border and controlled by a
government.

Ethnicity
The expression of the set of
cultural ideas held by a distinct
ethnic or indigenous group.
People who collectively and
publicly identify themselves as
distinct and unique based on
distinguishable cultural features
that set them apart from others,
such as language, shared ancestry,
common origin, customs, and
traditions. 8
Social
Differences
The society has various
manifestations of social differences
based on unique social characteristics or
qualities like social class, race, ethnicity,
gender, age, educational attainment,
occupation, position in the society and
the like.

In sociology, social differences
is usually equated with social
stratification, this describes the
relative social position of persons in
a given social group, category,
geographical region or other social
unit.

Gender
Refers to the socially
constructed roles, behaviors,
activities, and attributes that a
given society considers appropriate
for men and women (WHO, 2013).
Sex, chiefly centers on
biological differences (reproductive
system) such as male or female.

Socioeconomic
Status
Refers to the category of
persons who have more or less the
same socioeconomic privileges in a
society.
The concept of socioeconomic
varies between societies as the
ideas associated with being poor or
rich differ based on the collective
experiences of individuals.

Religion
An organized system of ideas
about the spiritual sphere or the
supernatural, along with associated
ceremonial or ritualistic practices
by which people try to interpret
and/or influence aspects of the
universe otherwise beyond human
control.

Exceptionality
Refers to the state of being
intellectually gifted and/or having
physically or mentally challenged
conditions concerning
personality/behavior,
communication, intellect, physical
appearance, or a combination of
more than one specific
exceptionality or disability.

Political
Identity
The world is visibly divided into
different countries. Each country
has its own political system to run
its government. A government is
the system by which a state or
community is controlled so as to
put order.

Political identity as a social
category refers to the set of
attitudes and practices that an
individual adheres to in relation to
the political systems and actors
within his or her society.
