Low Carbon Hubs Consultancy

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport

• SYSTRA – 2017
• Transport Scotland (TS) applied for funding under the ERDF 2014-2020
programme in March 2015 and has been allocated up to £25m under this
programme to deliver a Low Carbon Travel and Transport programme. Strathclyde
Partnership for Transport (SPT) commissioned SYSTRA to provide support in
developing an application to TS’s challenge fund. For low carbon bus hubs, the
approach comprised:
• Desktop review of low emission bus vehicle and recharging technologies;
• Consideration of potential hub locations taking account of route characteristics and wider
factors such as land availability;
• Stakeholder consultation with operators of services and manufacturers of bus vehicles and
recharging infrastructure; and
• Assessment of the costs and benefits of the different potential hub locations.
• After rigorous assessment, the preferred option recommended provision of
improvements to Ayr Bus Station for the delivery of a low carbon bus hub, including
consideration of potential routes to be adopted, likely fleet, and charger
requirements.

National Transport Authority Ireland: Bus Connects Costing

• SYSTRA – 2017
• SYSTRA undertook route cost modelling of the every route in the
Dublin Bus network. The route costings involved analysing the
route length, running and layover time, dead journeys, and the
vehicle requirement. We assessed the impact of the cost of materials,
fuel, using different vehicle types.
• The route cost model was flexible to be used on different vehicle
types and with alternative fuel sources.

3
National Transport Authority Ireland: Contract Specification

• SYSTRA – 2014-2019
• For over five years SYSTRA have assisted in the preparation of
contract specifications for multi-million pound tenders for public bus
services in Dublin and Waterford, going on to serve on both the Pre-
Qualification and Tender Assessment panels, before being part of the
team who “signed-off” these major contract awards on behalf of the
Authority. We were also involved in assisting with the successful
start-up period when the new contractor took over from the
incumbent. The value of the contracts was in excess of €225
million.

Outline Business Model and Fleet Management for Autonomous
Vehicles in Singapore, MinistryofTransport(MOT)andLandTransportAuthority(LTA)ofSingapore

• SYSTRA – 2018
• This Study considered the charging and operational requirements for
the introduction of fixed route and Mobility on Demand (MoD)
autonomous electric bus services in Singapore.
• It included:
• A review of potential bus fleet characteristics (e.g. range,
charging rates, passenger capacity etc)
• A network planning exercise to consider the suitability of these
vehicles to serve bus routes across the study area
• Preparation of an outline specification of the fleet and electric
charger requirements for implementing these services.

5
Qatar Bus Routes Optimisation Strategy, Ministry of Transport and
Communications (MoTC)

• SYSTRA – 2018
• SYSTRA UK undertook a Qatar Bus Routes and Operations Study
(QBROS) with the overarching aim providing an optimised network
up to 2021. The study included:
• SYSTRA developed a route plan methodology and multi-
criteria framework to assess different strategies.
• A bus fleet best practice review was undertaken for both diesel
and alternative fuelled vehicles, and a fleet plan produced.
• This was supported by presentation of the financial
implications of the emerging bus service network proposals.

6
Tabuk, Saudi Arabia: Bus Service Procurement

• SYSTRA – 2018
• Tabuk, Saudi Arabia was procuring a new bus service, SYSTRA
assisted in the drafting of contract specifications for routes,
timetables, vehicles and infrastructure including depots, staff
accommodation, bus stations and roadside infrastructure.

Feasibility Study for the Electrification of an STM Bus Garage

• SYSTRA – 2018
• SYSTRA Canada worked with the Société de transport de Montréal
(STM) in the development of infrastructure requirements related to
the operation of electric buses. SYSTRA undertook:
• Electrical capacity analysis required for the recharge of 210
electric buses in operation;
• Identification of various typical layout scenarios targeted for the
recharge of electrical buses;
• Inventory of equipment to be considered to carry out the
installations;
• Technical and functional description of the premises necessary
for the layout of the electrical installations required in a bus
garage that will support the operation of 210 electric buses ;
• A list of elements necessary to design the building and the
proposed layouts

8
Transport Hub Electric Simulator

• SYSTRA – 2018
• SYSTRA Canada developed a specific
simulation tool, THES (Transport Hub Electric
Simulator) to carry out complex calculations
resulting in dynamic operation scenarios for bus
journeys. THES allows:
• Digitisation, simulation and optimisation of
EV fleet performance and efficiency.;
• Simulation of diesel-to-electric transition
over years for small or large fleet; and
• optimisation parameters to set the perfect
solution.

• Video demonstration
