PRONOUNS
REPORTERS: GROUP 3
WHAT ARE REFLEXIVE
PRONOUNS?
Reflexive pronouns are words ending in -self or -
selves that are used when the subject and the object
of a sentence are the same (e.g., I believe in
myself). The nine English reflexive
pronouns are myself, yourself, himself, herself,
oneself, itself, ourselves,
yourselves, and themselves.
WHAT IS A SUBJECT IN A
SENTENCE?
A subject is a part of a sentence
that contains the person or thing
performing the action (or verb)
in a sentence.
WHAT IS THE OBJECT OF A
SENTENCE?
The object of a sentence is the person or thing
that receives the action of the verb. It is the who
or what that the subject does something to. That
sounds complicated, but we'll understand it more
after we practice.
EXAMPLE:
Terry carried out the trash.
In this sentence:
'Terry' is the subject: it is the one performing the
action
'carried' is the verb: it is the action being performed
by the subject
'trash' is the receiver of the action. So, it is the object.
GOING BACK TO THE TOPIC...
person singular plural
1st myself ourselves
(I sometimes talk to myself) (we baked the cake by ourselves)
2nd yourself yourselves
(you are too young to go out by (please take good care of yourselves)
yourself)
3rd himself themselves
(masculine) (my son did his homework himself) (the children cleaned the house
themselves)
3rd herself themselves
(feminine) (Dianne bought herself a new pair of (they divided the money between
shoes) themselves)
3rd itself themselves
(neuter) (the bird washed itself by splashing in (the students can monitor themselves)
a puddle)
General oneself
(there are many benefits in knowing
oneself).
REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS ARE
USED WHEN:
1. When the speaker or writer is referring to an action that
he or she has caused to happen and of which he or she
is also the object.
