SUM OF THE TERM

First term and common difference of an A.P.
are 6 and 3 respectively ; find S27.

 S27 = (12+26(3))
 First term (a) = 6
 Common difference (d) = 3
 = (12+78)

  We
 = ×90
 know that, 

 Sn = (2a+(n−1)d)
 = 1215
 Hence, S27 = 1215.
 ∴ S27 = (2(6)+(27−1)(3))
Find the sum of first 123 even natural numbers.

 S123 = (4+122(2))
 The given sequence is 2, 4, 6, 8 ...
 First term (a) = 2
 = (4+244)

 Common difference (d) = 2

 = ×248

  Number
 =15252
 of terms (n) = 123
 Hence, the sum of first 123 even
 We know that,
natural numbers is 15252.
 Sn = (2a+(n−1)d)
 ∴ S123= (2(2)+(123−1)(2))
Find the sum of all even numbers from 1 to 350.

The given sequence is 2, 4, 6, 8 ... 350  We know that,

First term (a) = 2
 Sn= (2a+(n−1)d)
Common difference (d) = 2
tn = 350  ∴ S175 = (2(2)+(175−1)(2))
Now,                = (4+174(2))
tn =a+(n−1)d 

   = (4+348)
⇒350=2+(n−1)2              = ×352
⇒350=2+2n−2
       = 30800
⇒2n=350
⇒n=175  Hence, the sum of all even numbers from 1
Thus, the number of terms (n) = 175. to 350 is 30800.
Sum of first 55 terms in an A.P. is 3300, find its
28th term.

60
 It is given that, 300
 ⇒3300× = (a+27d)
 S55 = 3300 5
1
 We know that,
 Sn = (2a+(n−1)d) 
 ⇒60 = a+ 27d

 S55 = (2a+(55−1)d)  We know t28 = a+ 27d
 3300 = (2a+54d)  ⇒t28=60
 3300 = x 2 (a+27d)  Hence, its 28th term is 60.
 3300 = 55 (a+27d)
In an A.P. 19th term is 52 and 38th term is 128,
find sum of first 56 terms.

It is given that, ∴ 52 = a+18(4)

t  = 52
19  a = 52− 72
t  = 128
38 a = −20
Now, Thus, a = −20 and d = 4.
tn=a+(n−1)d  We know that,
t19=a+(19−1)d Sn= (2a+(n−1)d)

⇒52=a+18d                  ...(1)  ∴ S56= (2(−20)+(56−1)(4))
t38=a+(38−1)d          =28 (−40+220)
128=a+37d                ...(2)
         =28 (180)
Subtracting eqn 1 from 2 we
get          =5040
19d=76  Hence, the sum of first 56 terms is 5040.
d=4
Complete the following activity to find the sum of natural numbers
from 1 to 140 which are divisible by 4.

 From 1 to 140, natural numbers divisible

by 4 are 4, 8, ... 136.
 a = 4 , d = 4 , tn= 136
 Now,
 tn= a+(n−1)d
 136 = 4+(n−1)4
 136 = 4+4n−4
 4n = 136
 n = 34
 Thus, number of terms (n) = 34.
 We know that,
 Sn= (2a+(n−1)d)
 ∴ S34 = (2(4)+(34−1)(4))

 = 17 (8+132)
 = 17 (140)
 = 2380
If the 9th term of an A.P. is zero then show that the 29th
term is twice the 19th term.

 t29 = −8d+28d
 It is given that,  =20d ...(2)
 t9 = 0  t19 = a+(19−1)d
 Now,  = −8d+18d
 tn = a+(n−1)d  = 10d ...(3)
 t9 = a+(9−1)d  From (2) and (3),

 0 = a+8d  we get t29 = 2t19

 Hence, the 29th term is twice the 19th
 a = −8d ...(1)
term.
 t29 = a+(29−1)d
