Mathematics 10 (Module 2) Arithmetic Sequence

Exercise 1
Distinguish the arithmetic sequences from the following sequences
Unit 1 1.1, 2, 4, 8, 16, …
Arithmetic Sequence 2.2, -2, 4, -8, 16, …
3.1, 0, -1, -2, -3, …
4.2, -8, 32, -128, …
5.256, 384, 512, 640, …
•A sequence is an arithmetic sequence if the terms have a common
difference.
d = tn – tn – 1 where tn is any nth term of the sequence.
Ex. 1, 0, -1, -2, -3, … d = t2 – t2 – 1
d = 0 – 1 = -1
d = -3 – (-2) = -1
•In an arithmetic sequence, tn = t1 + (n - 1)d, where n is the number of
terms, tn is the nth term and d is the common difference.
Name Example: Find the 20th term of the sequence 3, 9, 15, …
Solution: Find the common difference (d = tn – tn – 1)
d = t2 – t2 – 1 = d=9–3=6
Grade/Section
tn = t1 + (n - 1)d
t20 = t1 + (20 - 1) d
t20 = 3 + (20 - 1)6
Prepared by: t20 = 3+ (19)6

Mr. Jhon Robert S. Clavo t20 = 3 + 114

Subject Teacher
t20 = 117
The 30th term of an arithmetic sequence is 1193. Find the common The arithmetic series, or the series of an arithmetic sequence Sn, is the sum
difference if the first term is 4. of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence. It is indicated by the formula.
• Given: t1 = 4, t30 = 1580 d =? Sn = n/2 (t1 + tn)
tn = t1 + (n - 1)d But tn = t1 + (n - 1) d
1193 = 4 + (30 – 1) d Sn = n/2 [t1 + t1 + (n - 1) d]
1193 = 4 + 29d Sn = n/2 [2t1 + (n - 1) d]
1193 – 4 = 29d
1189 = 29 d Find the sum of the numbers divisible by 2 between 1 and 29 the numbers
divisible by 2 between 1 and 29 are
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 and 28
d = 41
Hence n = 14
The 4th term of an arithmetic sequence is 9 and the 15th term is 53.
Sn = n/2 (t1 + tn)
Find the first 3 terms.
Sn =14/2[(2 + 28)] = 7(30) = 210
Solution: to find the first 3 terms, t1 and d should be found.
t4 = 9, t15 = 53 tn = t1 + (n - 1)d
Sn = n/2 [2t1 + (n - 1)d]
9 = t1 + (4-1) = d = 9 = t1 + 3d
Sn = 14/2 [2(2) + (14 - 1)2]
53 = t1 + (15-1) = d = 53 = t1 + 14d
Sn = 7 (4 + 26)
Subtracting the two equations will eliminate t1
Sn = 7(30) = 210
44 = 11d
4=d
Activity:
Substituting the value of d = 4 in the first equation which is 9 = t1 + 3d
1. Find the 60th term of the arithmetic sequence -12, -7, -2, 3, …
9 = t1 + 3(4) tn = t1 + (n - 1)d t3 = -3 + (3 – 1)4
2. Find the first 3 terms of the arithmetic sequence whose 45th term is 20
9 = t1 + 12 t2 = -3 + (2 - 1)4 t3 = -3 + 8 and common difference is ½.
9 – 12 = t1 t2 = -3 + 4 t3 = 5 3. find the first term and common difference of an arithmetic sequence
-3 = t1 t2 = 1 whose 6th term is 27 and 15th term is 63.

Therefore, the 1st 3 terms are -3, 1, 5
