What we're going to learn today:
Be familiar with the basic concept, usage, and
functionality of VOM & Oscilloscope.
Have skills to analyze and measure the circuit
using the VOM & Oscilloscope.
Have knowledge to differentiate the
relationship between VOM & Oscilloscope in
measuring resistance, voltage and current.
VOM – Voltage Ohm Meter Calibration

What is a VOM?
Illustration of Selector Switch & Pointer.
What are the steps in reading multimeter?
What are the basic steps in measuring ohm meter?
What are the basic steps in measuring AC voltage?
Comparative analysis of VOM & DMM
We're going to make some of those things, and you can
take the kit, and the projects home with you.
VOM – Voltage Ohm Meter
Outlook of Multimeter
Pointer and Scale
single pointer with different scale for different
measurements

 Selector Switch
– select to measure
voltage (ac or dc),
current or resistance.
15mA
Reading from 20mA

Multimeter
As the Selection Switch is
at DC25mA, the
multimeter is used as a
ammeter with fsd 25mA.
The 250A scale is used.
Reading = 17.5mA
Between 15mA&20mA is
17.5mA.

terminals
Remember to set zero again
if the ohmmeter range is
changed.

Reading from 90Ω
Multimeter
 As the Selection
Switch is at x10,
the reading has to
be multiplied by
10.
 The reading is 90,
so the resistance x10
is 900  .

Measuring AC Voltage

If AC voltage is measured, remember to

use the “output “ terminal instead of
the “positive” terminal.
The “negative” terminal is still used.

AC V

Selector Switch must be at the AC V

DMM – Digital Multi
Meter
There are 2 styles of Digital Multi Meters
Switched
Manually switch between ranges Auto Range
to get most accurate reading. Switches between ranges
automatically for best reading.

Both of these styles

work the same
Meter leads
•Red meter lead
Is connected to Voltage/Resistance or amperage port
Is considered the positive connection

•Probes
Are the handles used to hold tip on
the tested connection

•Tips
Are at the end of the probe and
provides a connection point

•Black meter lead

Is always connected to the common port
Is considered the negative connection
Display & Dial Settings
• Digital Display
Shows measured value.

• Meter Dial
Turn dial to change functions.
Turn dial to OFF position after use.

• Panel Indicator
Shows each function and setting range to
turn dial to.

• Probe Connections
Specific for each function.
Common DMM Symbols

--- DC Voltage ( Capacitor
Hz Hertz mF MicroFarad
+ Positive m Micro
Negative m Milli
W Ohms M Mega
* Diode K Kilo
))) Audible Continuity OL Overload

These symbols are often found on multimeter and

schematics.
They are designed to symbolize components and
reference values.
