Kharkov as the capital of Soviet
Ukraine
The first capital is the unofficial title of the city of
Kharkov. It was established in connection with
the fact that on December 19, 1919, Kharkov
was formally declared the capital of the
Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic within the
USSR, as opposed to the then UNR with its
capital in Kiev.
As the capital of Soviet Ukraine, Kharkiv was
quickly built up, and the growth of the city's
population was also rapid.
The first Palace of Pioneers in the Soviet Union, the first
children's railway and the first airport in Ukraine were opened in
Kharkov.
Kharkov was the first to enter the Ukrainian radio air, the Kharkov
national football team became the first champion of Ukraine and the
USSR, Kharkov scientists were the first in the Soviet Union to split the
atomic nucleus.
Kharkiv is rightfully considered the student
capital of Ukraine.
The first educational institutions in the city
were the Imperial University (now the V.N.
Karazin Kharkiv National University),
opened in 1805, and the Institute of
Technology founded in 1885 (now the
National Technical University “Kharkov
Polytechnic Institute”).
Currently, Kharkiv ranks first in the country
in terms of the number of universities.
