Algeria is known as the sovereign state in the North Africa.
Visitors are drawn to Algeria by the natural beauty, rich culture,
fascinating history and warm hospitality offered by this North
African country, and Algeria is becoming increasingly popular as
an international tourist destination. With the knowledge that
tourism has the potential to contribute significantly on an
ongoing basis to the economy of Algeria, authorities place
emphasis on the development of the country’s infrastructure
and tourism facilities.
Algeria - International tourism, number of arrivals
The value for International tourism, number of arrivals in Algeria was 2,451,000 as of
2017. As the graph below shows, over the past 22 years this indicator reached a
maximum value of 2,733,000 in 2013 and a minimum value of 520,000 in 1995.
Algeria is a member of international organizations such as the
United Nations (UN), the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS), the Islamic Conference, the Mediterranean Sea Economic
Cooperation (MSEC), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO),
and is actively cooperating with the African Union, and other
organizations.

According to the Travel and Tourism Council, in 2015 Algeria only

ranks at the 132nd place out of 140 countries in terms of travel and
tourism competitiveness.
Algeria Tourism Statistics 1995-2021
International tourism receipts are expenditures by international
inbound visitors, including payments to national carriers for
international transport. These receipts include any other
prepayment made for goods or services received in the
destination country. They also may include receipts from same-
day visitors, except when these are important enough to justify
separate classification. For some countries they do not include
receipts for passenger transport items. Data are in current U.S.
dollars.
Algeria tourism statistics for 2017 was 172,000,000.00, a 30.08%
decline from 2016.
Algeria tourism statistics for 2016 was 246,000,000.00, a 29.11%
decline from 2015.
Algeria tourism statistics for 2015 was 347,000,000.00, a 9.81%
increase from 2014.
Algeria tourism statistics for 2014 was 316,000,000.00, a 3.07%
decline from 2013.
Tourism authorities and tourism policy

T he Algerian tourism sector has steadily improved in recent years.

In fact, several steps have been taken to improve the performance
of the sector and its organisational framework.
At national level, the organisation of the central administration of
the Ministry for Tourism and Craft Industries is governed by
executive decree No 10-255 of 20 October 2010.

Together with the state, the province contributes to economic,

social and cultural development. As regards tourism, the province
helps tap its tourism potential and encourages investment and the
development of memorials, in cooperation with municipalities.

The municipality promotes measures to strengthen its tourism

potential and encourages the relevant operators.
Natural disasters

Parts of Algeria are prone to severe and dangerous flood

damage. Northern Algeria is also within an earthquake zone. In
May 2003, a severe earthquake struck the Algiers area. There
were over 2,200 dead and more than 10,000 injured. Smaller
earthquakes occur regularly. In July 2014, an earthquake killed 6
people and injured 420.
You should familiarise yourself with safety procedures in the
event of an earthquake. To learn more about what to do before,
during and after an earthquake, see this advice from the US
Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Safety and security

Crime
Outside of business and diplomatic travel, currently there are few British
visitors to Algeria. While most visits to Algeria are trouble-free, in certain
areas of larger cities incidents of robbery and thefts do occur. Avoid areas
that you don’t know, especially after dark. Avoid carrying large amounts
of money or valuables around with you.

Local travel
Seek the advice of your hosts about appropriate security measures. If
possible you should arrange to be met on arrival in Algiers. You should
stay at one of the main hotels where proper security precautions are
taken.
It’s generally safe to move around the centre of Algiers during the day.
Ideally, travel around with someone who knows the city well. Avoid areas
that you don’t know, particularly in the suburbs of the city and especially
after dark. Don’t carry large amounts of money or valuables around with
you.
Road travel
Although you may drive in Algeria with a valid UK driving licence for
a maximum of 3 months, the Algerian authorities may also request
an International Driving Permit (IDP). You’re strongly advised to
apply for a valid IDP for your temporary stay in Algeria.

If you’re planning to hire a car, check with your car hire company for
information on their requirements before you travel.

While the major road system has improved, take particular care on
minor roads and at night. Algeria has a very high road traffic accident
rate. If possible travel in a convoy of at least 2-3 vehicles outside the
main towns.

If you are taking a taxi, ask your hotel to phone a reputable firm and
don’t allow other unknown passengers to join you during the
journey. Arrange with the driver to collect you for the return journey
as taxis are not widely available, particularly after dark.
Algeria s exchange rate regime is a managed float with no pre-announced path
for the exchange rate. Since 1995, the authorities aimed at maintaining a stable
REER against a basket of currencies weighted on the basis of the trade shares of
the country’s main trading partners. However, the REER has varied continuously
over the last decade.51 Moreover, in 2002–03, the REER of the Algerian dinar
depreciated by 17½ percent.
Opening hours

In Algeria, working hours are 8am to noon and 1pm to 5pm, from
Saturday to Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are the rest days.
Administrations are open on Thursday morning and the banks close
at 3pm.
During Ramadan, the pace is slowed and hours are modified (9am to
3pm in general).

Visa Application Procedures

 Processing Time
The processing time may vary according to the nationality of
applicant and visa type.
However visas submitted in person are generally issued within 07
working days*
b. Applying for a Visa
The Embassy will process visa applications made by applicants
who are resident in Indonesia,Singapore and Brunei Darussalam
only.
Regardless their age, kids traveling with parents need a visa.
Application must be made should they use their own passport to
travel. In case kids are on the parents’ passport,
only two photographs are required in addition to the parent’s
application.
Ports
With 1200 km of coastline, 11 commercial ports and 95% of its merchandise transport activity
being conducted by sea, the performance of Algeria’s port facilities is of the utmost
importance. The current strong government focus on increasing capacity for both passenger
and freight transport will entail the development of facilities and supporting infrastructure –
such as roads, railways and logistics platforms – and will be accompanied by huge public
expenditure, as well as private and foreign investment.
Roads
Motorway expansion is also on the agenda. A key project will be the construction of the Trans-
Saharan Highway in 2019. Algeria is set to deliver its segment of the highway, Route Nationale
1, a 2400-km road running from Algiers to Niger, 90% of which is complete. By July 2017 less
than 600 km was unfinished, and 200 km remained to be built of a 500-km branch road to Mali.
Air
Work is under way on a new 650,000-sq-metre terminal at Houari Boumediene Airport,
comprising a 200,000-sq-metre building, adjoined parking lot and an energy centre. CSCEC is
undertaking the construction, valued at AD90.3bn (€749m).
Rail
The €32bn, 5000-km expansion of the rail network is a priority under the current five-year
investment plan. There is a pressing need to reduce road traffic congestion, and improve
capacity for moving both passengers and freight across the country beyond urban areas by rail.
Traditional shopping for tourists
-Nobody makes better traditional caftans, karakous, and other women's outfits
than Menouba, the best destination for Algerian haute couture. Though it's
based in Algiers, you're as likely to see it on Paris runways as in Algeria proper.
-For gorgeous hand-woven carpets in traditional Berber patterns and vegetable-
dyed wool, Ghardaia is the place. If you can't make it there yourself, track
down Mahfoud Benslimane, who sells Ghardaia's famous carpets—all woven
by local women—at artisan fairs across the world.
-One of my favorite recent discoveries is Trico82, which reproduces classic
Algerian football/soccer jerseys for sale online and in sport shops around town.
An awesome classic gift!
-Boumehdi and Samir Hemiane are two of the most renowned ceramics
makers in Algiers, and both are located in Kouba.
-Cadeau-Artisanat in Paradou (pictured above), run by the all-knowing gallerist
Nacer, and Couleurs et Patrimoine in El Biar both have an eclectic selection of
handiwork.
-Kabyle jewelry from Tizi Ouzou and Bejaia and Touareg silver
from Tamanrasset and the wider Sahara are certainly the most iconic Algerian
jewelry styles, and are not to be missed. Find them in their regions of origin for
the best selection and prices.
