One of the world's great cities, Moscow is the capital of Russia.

It's the principal political, economic, financial, education, and transportation center. It is located on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, in the European part of Russia. The city constitutes about 7% of the total Russian population. Since it was first mentioned in chronicles of 1147, Moscow has played a vital role in Russian history. It was the capital of the former Soviet Union and Muscovite Russia, the pre-Imperial Russian state. For more than 600 years Moscow has been the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. Moscow's architecture is world-renowned. Moscow is also well known as the site of Saint Basils Cathedral, with its elegant onion domes, as well as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior (the tallest Orthodox church in the world) and the Seven Sisters (a group of Moscow skyscrapers designed in the Stalinist style). The Russian Orthodox patriarch, Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, resides in the Danilov Monastery, whose is located on the right bank of the Moskva River. Theatre, music, and art are important in the city's life. The Bolshoi Theatre, The Maly Theatre, and The Moscow Art Theatre are especially renowned. Of the many museums and galleries, Moscow Kremlin, the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Andrei Rubliov museum are especially notable. Tretyakov Gallery and Andrei Rubliov museum exibits a great collection of Russian icons and paintings. There are 96 parks and 18 gardens in Moscow, including 4 botanical gardens. The most important are: The Central Park of Culture and Rest. Its located along the Moskva river. The park contains estrades, children's attractions, dancing, tennis courts and other sports facilities. The Losiny Ostrov National Park. Its the first national park of Russia, located in Moscow and Moscow Oblast. It is presumed to be the largest forest in a city of comparable size. Moscow has always been a popular destination for tourists. Some of the better known attractions include the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site, Moscow Kremlin and Red Square. The Church of the Ascension at Kolomenskoye, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and another popular attraction.

Moscow also hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics.


Nowadays, Moscow also remains a major economic center and is home to a large number of billionaires. It possesses a complex transport system that includes the world's busiest metro system, which is famous for its architecture. Beside, Moscow, It's home to many scientific and educational institutions, as well as numerous sport facilities.
