Turkestan
This is a city that is 1500 years old. The fame of Turkestan was brought by the Sufi and
poet Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, revered in the Islamic world. His poems existed only orally for
a long time, having been passed from mouth to mouth for centuries, and were recorded
only a few centuries after the author's death. Also known to historians as Yassy and
Shavgar, this city was the capital of the Kazakh Khanate, the ceremonies of their accession
to the throne were held here. It was here that the ambassadors of foreign states were
sent. One of the most notable monuments of Turkestan is dedicated to Ahmed Yassavi. This
is a whole architectural complex of palaces and temples, which attracts crowds of tourists
every year. This place is revered as a shrine by the Muslim community of Kazakhstan and
other Central Asian countries. In ancient times, visiting it three times was equivalent to a
pilgrimage to Makkah. The entire city center is an ensemble of historical structures, among
which is the grave of Temur's granddaughter, Robia Sultan Begim, tombs of Kazakh khans
and representatives of the noble strata of the population. By the number of graves of
notable people, this is the largest city in Turkestan.UNESCO has listed Turkestan (or
rather the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi) as a World Heritage Site. The railway
station, which is also very interesting... an architectural monument. It was built in 1903
during the laying of the southern branch of the Orenburg-Tashkent railway.
The pearl of the Great Silk Road is the city of Turkestan – one of the oldest cities not only
in Kazakhstan, but also in Central Asia. Originated in 490, it reached its heyday in the XII
century. Surrounded by powerful fortress walls, Turkestan was the administrative center
of the Central Asian rulers from the dynasties of Khorezmshahs, Mongols, Timurids,
Sheibanids. In the XVI - XVIII centuries, it was the capital of the Kazakh Khanate, located
at the junction of nomadic and sedentary cultures, at the intersection of trade routes. The
majestic ceremonies of the accession to the throne of the khans, with the participation of
representatives of other states, took place in this city. The glory of the city stretched all
over the world. To a large extent, this was facilitated by the name of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi,
a dervish, a preacher of Sufism, a poet who lived in this city. A majestic mausoleum was
erected on the order of Amir Timur (233 years later) over the modest tomb of the saint,
which became a place of pilgrimage, a three-time visit to which was equated with a hajj to
Mecca. Thus, Turkestan has earned the glory of a Muslim shrine.
Interesting places of Turkestan
The mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi
The mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi is an unsurpassed masterpiece of medieval
architecture. This is an amazing complex of palaces and temples with 30 different rooms
and halls. The outer diameter of the main dome is more than 40 m, the circumference is
130 m, the height of the minarets is 12 m. The elegance of the decor, the patterned vaults of
the ceilings, the colored mosaic impress. The monument has been restored in its original
form and is protected by the state. Everyone can admire the pearl of the Medieval East in
the city of Turkestan. According to popular belief, the road to Turkestan must necessarily
lie through the mausoleum of Arystan-Bab, erected over the grave of the teacher Ahmed
Yassawi. According to legend, this elder was an associate of the Prophet Mukhammed and
lived 500 years in order to pass on the knowledge and wisdom of the prophet Khoja Ahmed
Yassawi. Since the XVI century, Yassi has received its modern name - Turkestan. Dozens
of ancient cities, settlements and religious buildings adorn the surroundings of Turkestan,
and each monument is unique in its own way.
Karavan Saray complex
One of the sensational places of the city is the complex "Караван Сарай". The complex
includes a street of merchants and artisans of the Silk Road, a "flying theater", an
amphitheater for horse shows, an oriental bazaar, shopping malls and boutiques, hotels
and restaurants, a SPA and fitness center, a cinema, a family entertainment center. At the
same time, all structures are connected by a water channel, on which a theatrical show on
the water "Boat Parade" will be held. Keruen-sarai has no analogues in Central Asia and
is intended to become the main tourist attraction center after the mausoleum of Khoja
