Cognitive Dissonance Learning Theory

• Cognitive dissonance refers to a situation
involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or
behaviors. This produces a feeling of mental
discomfort leading to an alteration in one of the
attitudes, beliefs or behaviors to reduce the
discomfort and restore balance.

• The theory of cognitive dissonance by Leon

Festinger (1957) indicates that we have an inner
drive to maintain all our attitudes and actions in
order and prevent disharmony (or dissonance).
This is known as the cognitive continuity theory.

EXAMPLES
• When people smoke (behavior) and they know
trixieremorozatcc
trixieremorozatcc that smoking causes cancer (cognition), they are in
a state of cognitive dissonance. Liking smoking is
1st cognition and knowing the result that this is
harmful is 2nd cognition so cognitive dissonance
created.

• When people eat junk food (behaviour) and they

know that it produces fat (cognition), they are in
state of cognitive dissonance.

• My parents told me not to leave the house, but my

friends need me.

• The theory states that when two cognitions

became dissonant cognitive dissonance happens.
