DEFINITION

• Tuberculosis is an infectious disease primarily


infecting lung parenchyma most often caused by
Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
• It may spread to any part of the body including
meninges, kidney, bones and lymph nodes.
INCIDENCE
According to WHO:
 1.4 million people died from tuberculosis in 2020
In 2019, 10 million people fell ill with tuberculosis
o 5.6 million men
o 3.2 million women
o 1.2 million children
According to the WHO the estimated incidence rate of
tuberculosis in India is 2.84 million. About 40 percent of the
population in India is affected with tuberculosis bacteria, of
which majority is latent TB.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
• Constitutional Symptoms: • Pulmonary Symptoms
 cough  dyspnea
 anorexia  non- resolving broncho pneumonia
 low grade fever > 2 weeks  chest tightness
 night sweat  non-productive cough
 fatique  mucopurulent sputum with hemoptysis
 weight loss  chest pain

History collection
Physical examination
Sputum microscopy for AFB (Acid Fast Bacilli)
Chest X-ray
Mantoux /Tuberculin skin test- purified protein
derivative (PPD)
Thoracocentesis
Bronchoscopy
CT- scan
Biopsy
COMPLICATIONS
Respiratory failure
 Pneumothorax
 Pneumonia
