CARBON
CYCLE
- The carbon cycle describes the process in which carbon atoms
continually travel from the atmosphere to the Earth and then
back into the atmosphere. Since our planet and its atmosphere
form a closed environment, the amount of carbon in this system
does not change.
- It shows how atoms of carbon can exist within different
compounds at different times and be recycled between living
organisms and the environment.
WHAT ARE THE 4 STEPS OF
CARBON CYCLE?

STEP 1: Photosynthesis – use of CO2 along with water and the sun’s energy to
produce glucose and release O2.
STEP 2: Respiration – both plants and animals use O2 to breakdown glucose. The by
products are carbon dioxide and water.
STEP 3: Decomposition – process by which organisms like bacteria break down the
tissues and excretions of other organisms to simple substances. This process of decay
releases carbon dioxide from the compounds retained in the bodies of organisms
when they die.

DECOMPOSITION
STEP 4:
COMBUSTION
HUMAN INTERVENTIONS

- Burning Fossil Fuels

- Changing Land Use
- Using limestone to make concrete all transfer
significant quantities of carbon into the
atmosphere
