Basic Concepts
Let’s start with the first set of slides
What is a physical
examination ?

Physical examination is the inspection,

palpation, measurement, and auscultation
of the body and its part
Degree of the patient’s pain

Subjective Examination
(History)
Inspection
Palpation

Palpation is performed to assess

◎ Bony and soft tissue contours
◎ Soft tissue consistency
◎ Skin temperature
◎ Texture
2.
Joint Range of
Motion
Assessment of Active ROM

Assessment of the AROM can AROM my be decrease due to the

provide the following patient following patient factors :
information : ◎ Unwillingness to move
◎ Willingness to move ◎ Inability to follow instructions
◎ Level of consciusness ◎ Restricted joint mobility
◎ Ability to follow instructions ◎ Muscle weakness
◎ Attention ◎ Pain
◎ Coordination
◎ Joint ROM
◎ Movement that cause or
increase pain
◎ Muscle strength
Assessment of Passive ROM

Assesment of the PROM provides

information about the following :
◎ Amount of movement possible PROM is usualy slightly greater
at the joint than AROM.
◎ Foctors responsible for limiting
movement
◎ Movement that cause or
increase pain
Assessment of Passive ROM

To assess the PROM at a joint, stabilize the proximal joint

segment and move the distal joint segment through the full
PROM and do the following :
◎ Determine the quality of the movement
◎ Determine the end feel
◎ Note the presence of pain
Measurement of ROM

Muscle Testing
Let’s start with the first set of slides
Resisted Movement Testing
Normal (5): Muscle can withstand a strong
degree of resistance against gravity

Good (4): Muscle can withstand a moderate

degree of resistance against gravity

Manual Fair (3): muscle is able to sustain the test

position against gravity
Muscle
Testing Poor (2): muscle is able to complete the
ROM in a plane that is parallel to gravity

Trace (1): muscle can preform palpable

contraction without movement

Zero (0): no contraction
