In 1980, he graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Portland, USA. His dissertation on atomic reactors was highly appreciated. After that, Sultan Al-Athel received a degree in time management from the Covey Leadership Center, then a certificate in the field of variables and leadership principles of the twenty-first century, at the Franklin Covey Center. The story of his illness started in 1997, when he diagnosed by ALS and the disease lost him the full ability to move and speak except for the movement of the eyes and lips.
