What are the Pandora Papers?

The Pandora Papers are a release of more than 12 million

leaked documents that reveal the hidden and sometimes
unethical or corrupt dealings of the global wealthy and elite—
including prominent world leaders, politicians, corporate
executives, celebrities, and billionaires.
UNDERSTANDING the Pandora Papers
 In October 2021, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ)
released the Pandora Papers to the media and general public, consisting of
nearly 12 million files filling almost 3 terabytes of data.

 The Pandora Papers uncover a complex web of tax havens, shell corporations,
and offshore accounts that hide the true ownership of billions of dollars of assets.
What do we mean by 'offshore?
 The Pandora Papers reveal complex networks
of companies that are set up across borders,
often resulting in hidden ownership of money
and assets.
 For example, someone may have a property in
the UK, but own it via a chain of companies
based in other countries, or "offshore".
 These offshore countries or territories are
where:
 it's easy to set up companies
 there are laws that make it difficult to identify
owners of companies
How big a slice of all offshore
provider data in the world does the
Pandora Papers leak represent?
The Pandora Papers probe offers a broad look at secrecy jurisdictions and offshore service
providers, but the data came incomplete.
to say how much of the universe of provider data we have, a small fraction, probably. The quality
of the data varied by provider. In some cases, the data tied to companies didn’t offer information
about the jurisdiction where they were registered, the period during which an individual was
linked to an entity, or about intermediaries. The data still offered important information about
owners and, in some cases, transactions and other financial details.
How much money is kept offshore
No one knows for sure. Estimates by economists range from $5 trillion to $32 trillion, with the higher
end representing more than a third of the entire global domestic product.

Russia, Persian Gulf nations and Latin America countries lead the way in the amount of their citizens’
money stashed overseas.

The equivalent of 60% of Russian GDP is held offshore, compared with about 15% in Continental
Europe and only a few percent in Scandinavian countries, according to research published in 2017
from economists Annette Alstadsæter, Niels Johannesen and Gabriel Zucman.
Who was exposed in the Pandora Papers?
While reporters and investigators are combing through the hundreds of people
named in the millions of files released, some notable revelations have already
come to light. Some of these include:
Famous entertainers Elton John, Ringo Starr, Jackie Chan, Bono, Julio Iglesias,
and Shakira were named in the papers. Lawyers from many of these celebrities
have claimed that no wrongdoing was done and that appropriate disclosures
and taxes have been filed on all offshore monies.3
How manny Indians are named in the exposé?
In total, the ICIJ found links between almost 1,000
companies in offshore havens and 336 high-level
politicians and public officials, including more than a
dozen serving heads of state and government, country
leaders, cabinet ministers, ambassadors And others.
Why so many beneficial owners from Russia
and Latin America?
Some of the providers, based on their location and the
jurisdictions where they do business, such as Cyprus,
have a large proportion of Russian clients, the largest
group by nationality in the Pandora Papers data.
