Background
 For confirming the specifications and performances of an electrical
power transformer it has to go through a number of testing procedures.
Some tests are done at a transformer manufacturer premises before
delivering the transformer.
 Routine tests of transformer include
 Winding resistance test of transformer
 Transformer ratio test
 Transformer vector group test
 Measurement of impedance voltage/short circuit impedance (principal tap) and load loss
(Short circuit test)
 Measurement of no load loss and current (Open circuit test)
 Measurement of insulation resistance
 Oil pressure test on transformer to check against leakages past joints and gaskets

Definition
 In electrical engineering, a vector group, officially called a
connection symbol, is the International Electro-technical
Commission (IEC) method of categorizing the high voltage (HV)
windings and low voltage (LV) winding configurations of three-
phase transformers.

 The vector group designation indicates the windings

configurations and the difference in phase angle between them.

Purpose
 The Determination of vector group of
transformers is very important before connecting
two or more transformers in parallel.

 If two transformers of different vector groups are

connected in parallel then phase difference exist
between the secondary of the transformers and
large circulating current flows between the two
transformers which is very detrimental.
