What are Digital Literacy?

Digital literacies are the individual‘s capabilities to be able to


effectively and responsibly function and perform in a digital
society. The term digital literacy‘ was coined by Paul Gilster
in 1997.

In school it has become a buzzword which refers to the abili


ty to access, process, understand, utilize, create media cont
ent using information tecchnologies and the internet.

Digital Literacy Skills vs. Digital Literacy
Lynch (2017), identified eight digital literacy skills needed
to become digitally
literate. These are:

 Coding
 Collaboration
 Cloud Software
 Word Processing Software
 Screencasting
 Personal Archiving
 Information evaluation
 Social Media Savy
Cloud Software is an essential part of document management. The
cloud is used to
store everything from photos to research projects to term papers and
music. Whilestudents are likely used to saving their pictures, they
may not have the necessary
processes in place to save their academic work in a way that is
discoverable and
accessible.
