Introduction
 The design of shallow foundations is mainly controlled by two major
criteria which are the settlement of the foundations and the bearing
capacity of the footing.

 On cohesion less soils, the problem of quantifying settlement of shallow

foundation is quite complicated due to uncertainty and unquantifiable
factors associated with it.

 Settlement prediction methods have focused on correlations with in-situ

tests.

 Irregular prediction for magnitude of settlement by the available methods

Overview of Neural Network
Objective
 To develop a model to predict the settlement of foundation on cohesion less soil.
Methodology
1. Inputs and Outputs
 SPT blow count ( N )
 Length / Breadth ( L/B )
 Depth of footing / Breadth ( Df/B )
 Footing width (B)
 Footing net applied pressure , q
 Measured Settlement
2. Training
 As the prediction of settlement of shallow foundations on cohesion less soils does
not involve any time-related parameter components , feed forward, rather than
recurrent, networks are used.

 Feed forward networks trained with the back-propagation algorithm have already
been applied
3. Model Validation
 Once the training phase of the model has been successfully accomplished, the performance
of the trained model is validated using the validation data.
 The purpose of the model validation phase is to ensure that the model has the ability to
generalize within the limits set by the training data
Discussion
 Dummy inputs and outputs are used in this work for now to work on the ANN model and
to generate the regression plot

 . In actual practice the inputs and outputs parameters are the real field data.
