•A vector whose direction remains unchanged when a linear transformation is

applied to it is called eigenvector and the points in that matrix are called
eigenvalues.
•If A is a n*n matrix , then a non zero vector X is called eigenvector of A for some scalar

AX= X
MATRIX Eigenvector Eigenvalue

• Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues are mainly used to capture key information that is stored in
large matrix
Applications of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors: OIL EXTRACTION

 In order to extract oil from the ground and from various parts of land many oil companies use Eigenvalues
and Eigenvectors. Oil companies frequently use eigenvalue analysis to explore land for oil and other
substances

 Oil , Dirt and other substances all gives rise to linear systems. These substances have different eigenvalues
and eigenvectors, thus due to eigenvalue analysis help oil companies to give a good indication of where oil
reserves are located to extract oil

 Oil companies place probes(a small censor which determines the type of fluid in its vicinity in production of
oil) around the extraction site to pick up the waves that result from a huge truck which is used to vibrate the
ground

 The waves are changed as they pass through different substances in the ground. The analysis of these waves
and with the help of eigenvalue and eigenvector analysis helps the oil companies to possible drilling sites.
