What is Vortex Shedding?

 In fluid dynamics, vortex shedding is an oscillating

flow that takes place when a fluid such as air or
water flows past a bluff body at certain velocities,
depending on the size and shape of the body. In this
flow, vortices are created at the back of the body
and detach periodically from either side of the body
forming a  vortex street.
 The fluid flow past the object creates alternating
low-pressure vortices on the downstream side of the
object. The object will tend to move toward the low-
pressure zone.
Principle of Vortex Flow meter

The principal essentially means that when an

obstruction is placed in the path of flow, it can
produce a series of vortex alternating from each side
of the obstruction . The frequency of alternating of
these vortices is proportional to the flow rate being
obstructed.

Governing Equation

The frequency at which vortex shedding

takes place for an infinite cylinder is
related to the Strouhal number by the
following equation

St=fD/V

Where St is dimensionless strounal

number, f is the vortex shedding frequency
,D is the diameter of the cylinder ,and v is
the flow velocity
Advantages

• No moving part
• Gives volumetric flow rate
• Use to measure flow rate of gas
• Use to measure corrosive, poisonous liquids
Applications of vortex shedding flow meter

 Use to measure flow of water

 Waste water , mining , mineral processing
 Chemical and petrochemical processing
