WHAT IS PREJUDICE?
• Prejudice: Prejudice is the act of judging someone, like a particular
group before having any information about them. A prejudice can be
both positive or negative. Prejudice is often associated with both racism
and discrimination. People can be prejudiced due to their religion
,culture, race, gender, color etc..

• For e.g.:
• How George Floyd got killed as an innocent man as he was accused of
something he didn't even do.

• How the Palestinians are being discriminated towards and been thrown
bombs at.
PREJUDICE IN TKAM
• Two main people in tkam are prejudged; Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. The main person who leads the racism
is Atticus finch. Boo Radley is prejudged as he chooses to stay in his house. Whilst Robinson is judged due to his
skin color.

• Atticus finch is a victim of prejudice as he uses his power to stand up for the innocence of a black man. The
gossip from Maycomb about boo Radley portrays the prejudged and accusing system of the town. Only due to
him taking the choice of staying in his house.

• This is evident as miss Stephanie Crawford spreads rumors of boo Radley as she says.. “So jem received much of
his information from miss Stephanie Crawford…”( lee, tkam 11 ). She explains her ruthless rumors “as Mr Radley
passes by, boo drove the scissors into his parent’s leg…” ( 11 ).
PREJUDICE IN TKAM
• Prejudice is displayed varies times by several characters throughout the novel. This has occurred many times as
people in Maycomb are prejudiced and very racist against the African Americans. An e.g. is when Tom Robinson
was accused on sexually abusing mayella only because he is a black man and she is a white woman. This
expresses the depth of prejudice. Furthermore he had evidence and points that he was innocent. Atticus had
risked his reputation for him as he wanted the safety of his children as he is not racist. On the other hand
Bobwell accused a black man of rape and even spat on Atticus in public. In tkam we have come across a range of
situations that help us understand the difficulty and hardship in living in a racist community/society.

• Scout and jem are exposed to the real world from the murders to the unequal decisions made, this way they get
to have a better understanding that they are against the community. Tom Robinson is prejudged by various
people which include of bob ewell, scout, Mr Gilmer. for e.g. when scout states ”well, dill after all he’s just a
negro”(199).
QUOTE
• “You will never really understand a person until you
consider from his point of view, until you climb into his
skin and walk around it” (chp.3,pg 30). This was said by
Atticus to Scout as she was discouraged once she came
from school and he manages to help her understand the
situation. The technique used in this quote is metaphor
as it states “until you climb unto his skin and walk
around it”. This expresses how to understand a person
you need to be them in other words put yourself in
there shoes.
THE MOVIE ‘SELMA’
• Selma a film directed by Ava DuVernay ,this film retells the events
which highlights the revolutionary movement for voting rights in
1964 led by Martin Luther Kind Jr. The main idea of the movie is
about a campaign in 1965 which was created to protect the equal
voting right for African American Citizens. It expressed how every
citizen has the right to vote and all should have equal rights.
PREJUDICE IN SELMA
• Throughout all of history African Americans have always suffered and struggled with issues of racism and being
prejudged. Today this crisis still continues and is a big problem in the American society mainly. It expresses
when the African civil right activists marched to protest how they couldn't’t vote. They fought for this but at
the march they got beaten and some individuals even died.

• It caught attention worldwide as the right to vote is democracy. The fact that they wore beaten when they
sough such a basic right was a dramatic representation of the American government. The Africans wore
discriminated towards and prejudged only because of their color. It is mention in the movie by Martin Luther
kind Jr as he states “It is unacceptable that they use their power to keep us voiceless” .In this quote we further
more understand the prejudice and how the Africans are sick and tired of it. The technique used in this quote is
metaphor.
SOURCE FROM MOVIE
In this video we understand the
amount of racism and
discrimination towards the
Africans and how they stand tall
and fight against this crisis. We
see how they are being falsely
judged and been treated
disgustingly. Just like Atticus
stands for the black man he is
standing up for himself
PREJUDICE IN TKAM AND SELMA

• Tkam explores the racism and prejudice against black people in Alabama.
Scout had learned a life lesson from her father Atticus as he states “you
cant really understand a person until you consider things from his point of
view” in this quote it is evident Selma explores Martin Luther kings life
and expresses the struggles and hardships he went through. He got into
jail due to his protests and fighting for his rights.

• In both these movies highlight how racism and prejudice are taking over
the world. Additionally they both give us an understanding of how people
can be so judgmental and cruel without knowing anything.
