Rajasthan Agricultural Research Institute

 This Agricultural Research Station (ARS) now called as Rajasthan Agricultural Research
Institute (RARI) is a constituent of Sri Karan Narendra Agriculture University, Jobner,
Jaipur.
 Since its inception in 1943 it has come a long way, overcoming an era of national food
deficits to that of self-sufficiency with a surplus food-grains reserve.
 This research station was initially under the control of the state Govt., which in April
1977 transferred it along with the responsibilities of crop research to the then Udaipur
University, a multi-faculty university.
 Later, in 1987, the first Agricultural University in the state was established with its main
campus at Bikaner and this research station thus came under the jurisdiction of the
Agricultural University, presently known as the Sri Karan Narendra Agriculture
University(SKN).
Facility Available:  Testing and evaluation of different entries of
1.Disease free & healthy vegetable, fruit & flower vegetable crops.
seedling growing facility  Developing production and protection technologies
2.Protected cultivation of vegetables, fruits and flowers.

3.BOD, Autoclave, Seed germinator

 Introduction of new vegetable crops.

Strawberry
Fragaria ananassa
Introduction

 In 2018, maximum fruit was produced by China (2.7 million tons), followed by
the US (1.2 million tons) and Mexico (0.59 million tons).

 In India ,the Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar belt contributes around 85% of the

total production in the country. The rest comes from Himachal Pradesh and
Jammu and Kashmir.

 The yield varies according to season and locality. A yield of 20 to 25 tons per
hectare is excellent, though yields upto 50 tons per hectare have been reported
under ideal conditions.
Geographical location
 Strawberry (Fragaria sp.) is a native of temperate regions,
but varieties are available which can be cultivated in sub.
Tropical climate. Its main centres of cultivation are
Nainital (district) and Dehradun in Uttar Pradesh,
Mahabaleshwar (Maharashtra), Kashmir Valley,
Bangalore and Kalimpong (West Bengal).
 In recent years, strawberry is being cultivated successfully
in plains of Maharashtra around Pune,Nashik and Sangali
towns.
 The strawberry is the most widely adapted of the small
fruits. Strawberries are grown throughout Europe, in
every state of the United States, as well as in Canada and
South America.
Plantation by runners.
Climate
 Strawberry thrives best in temperate climate, short day plant requires exposure to about 10 days of
less than 8 hours sunshine for initiation of flowering. In winter, the plants do not make any growth
and remain dormant.
 The exposure to low temperature during this period helps in breaking dormancy of the plant. In
spring when the days become longer and the temperature rises.
 The plants resume growth and begin flowering. The varieties grown in milder sub. Tropical climate
do not require chilling and continue to make some growth during winter.

 From the standpoint of response to length of the light period, strawberries are placed in two groups:
(1) varieties that develop flower buds during both long and short light periods, the everbearing
varieties
(2) varieties that develop flower buds during the short light periods only, most commercial varieties.

Secondary metabolite pathway
• Strawberries are one of the
best sources of bioactive
compounds, such as
polyphenols (especially
flavonols and anthocyanins)
and vitamin C.
• The phenolic acids in the
strawberry fruits were
represented by gallic,
chlorogenic, p-coumaric,
ferulic and ellagic acids.
Chlorogenic acid is the
predominant phenolic acid.
• The chlorogenic acid content

Recent advancement
 Somaclonal variation was induced in strawberry plants regenerated from leaf and petiole-derived
callus. Although the frequency of plant regeneration was generally low for all tested genotypes, a
relatively high rate of variation was induced among regenerated somaclones by increasing the
intervals for subcultures to 12 weeks, and also by transferring the calli
 The analysis of the origin, for all strawberry variants identified so far, suggested that both
genotype and type of explant strongly influence the occurrence of somaclonal variation. A
relatively high number of variants could be obtained by controlling the factors involved in the
maintenance of plant regeneration ability in strawberry callus for a long period.
 A variant having a modified (white) color of flesh for all fruits, induced from petiole-derived
callus of cv. Gorella, was reported for the first time. Since most of the useful variations affecting
plant vigor, fruit yield and runnering ability occurred in strawberry somaclones regenerated from
leaf-derived callus, the results suggested the type of variation in plants regenerated by
organogenesis, is related to the type of explant.

Future prospects

 Breeding and induction of somaclonal variation are useful to create new genetic
variability for the improvement of strawberry genotypes.
 The application of classical breeding and biotechnological approaches are
potential tools to improve yield and taste of strawberry.
 Different diseases like crown rot and Verticillium significantly impede yield.
Somaclonal variation is a breeding tool for future improvement of strawberry
varieties.
 The genetic improvement of strawberry progenies through recurrent reciprocal
selection (RRS) is a cyclical breeding procedure designed to improve the cross of
two populations from different heterotic groups by using both general and specific
combining ability.
