UNDERPASS
CIVE 527 ASSIGNMENT #4
Authors:
BRIANNA CROCKER, RACHEL BLOWES,
NICHOLAS SWAN, ROBYN CONWAY,
ALEXANDER DOW
Repair Proposal:
● Considering the severity of the damage to the southern portion of
the underpass, our goal is to extend the structure’s usable life by
10 years before its replacement.
Proposed Chemical Treatments
● Specific chemical remediation techniques (e.g. electrochemical
extraction (ECE) and realkalization) will not be used for several
reasons
○ Very costly techniques
○ Extensive preparation process which would casue extended traffic
disruption
Concrete Removal Methods
Methods of Choice:
Hydromilling
• Will be used on abutment walls and
ceiling to remove concrete underneath
rebar and clean corroded steel

• Edges of patches must be feathered

where shotcreting will be used

Impacting
• Hammer method will be used on the
underpass ceiling to remove loose
concrete.
Concrete Removal Methods
Methods not chosen:
1. Cutting
2. Blasting
3. Crushing
4. Presplitting

• Cutting and crushing cannot be easily applied on

vertical surfaces
• Blasting may induce severe vibrations potentially
causing damage
• Presplitting is not cost effective and could
damage steel along with the surrounding concrete
Concrete Replacement Methods
Method of Choice:
Dry Mix Shotcrete
• Dry Mix Shotcrete will be used on
both the abutment walls and
underpass ceiling.
○ Wet mix not effective for overhead
application

• Cost effective and reduces disruptions

to users/citizens.

• Shotcrete is more versatile than other

methods
○ Can be used on horizontal or
vertical surfaces
Concrete Replacement Methods
Method of Choice:

Dry-Packing

• Will be used to replace the

bottom of beams since it can
be used for overhead
applications
Concrete Replacement Methods
Method not chosen:
1. Trowel Filling
2. Form & Cast-In Place
3. Form & Pump
4. Placed Aggregates
• Trowel filling cannot be implemented (for thin layers only)

• Form and Cast as well as Form and Pump both require extensive formwork
which would disrupt traffic for extended periods

• Placed aggregate will not be used as it requires specific skilled labour

Crack Repair Techniques

● Cracking issues will be

addressed during concrete
removal and replacement
techniques previously
discussed
Preventative Maintenance
● To prevent further drainage damage to the underpass roof an unbonded
overlay will be used on the overpass deck
○ A thin epoxy overlay will be used to prevent ingress of deleterious
chemicals that lead to corrosion damage
● Prior to concrete replacement sacrificial zinc anodes will be attached to
cleaned rebar to slow future damage from occuring

Attach zinc anode after

cleaning
