examples of straightforward ideas frequently within the essay, and they
usually don’t take more than two to three sentences.
•Extended Examples – These examples contain more detail. Such detail is
needed because extended examples function as concrete illustrations of
ideas that are too complex to be made clear by a brief example.

experience.
Tips and Guidelines to writing
A good introduction normally features two parts
Hook
- the hook is what entices the reader to keep reading your paper.
Thesis Statement
-The thesis statement is a small introduction of what your exemplification
essay
will be about.
-it is a quick description of the overall point of the body of the essay.
For example, an introduction of the topic mentioned in this essay.
Introduction
“Most people do not agree with their parents growing up, but why, what
makes a perfect parent? Is it unconditional love or is it just providing for
needs? I cannot tell you what makes a perfect parent, but I can tell you
what made my father an almost perfect parent. In my opinion, I had an
outstanding dad who had an exceptional balance in what it takes to be a
perfect father, which I believe takes three key features. To be a great dad it
takes leadership, being a good advisor, and being a friend.”
Tips and Guidelines to
Writing
After finishing your introduction, you will have to proceed to the body
portion of the essay. The length of the body depends on the instructions
given by the lecturer. It is recommended that before writing an
exemplification paper, you should organize your ideas and examples.
Planning comes into play when writing the body of exemplification essay; a
good body should look like the example In the next slide.
Body
“Leadership is more than being in charge or simply being head of a group.
Leadership is dedication to doing what it takes to help the people around
you win. Leadership is the acts of General Patton during World War II. As
he heard of American men surrounded by German forces, he did not
wait for someone else to do something, he neither stayed by his campfire
during the bitter winter and stayed warm, nor he rested his mind for a split
second.
Body
Instead, he jumped to their call and pushed through snow and mud,
leading his men to the aid of his fellow Americans. Leadership is my dad’s
ability to show you the correct way to doing things but still give you the
option to make your choice. Leadership is pushing your needs aside for the
benefit of others and is an essential component to an ideal parent, but it is
only the beginning of becoming a great parent.”
Tips and Guidelines to Writing
The last thing that needs to be done is to wrap up your essay. The
conclusion of exemplification essay involves a summary of the major topics
discussed. Also, you may want to restate your thesis but rather than
duplicating what you had written, you should try and paraphrase it. An
example of conclusion would be something like this.
Conclusion
“To be a great father it takes the dedication to be a leader, the wisdom to be
an advisor, and the heart to be a friend. Although being perfect is
impossible, if a parent pursues these attributes, they will be an incredible
parent who can grow another generation of amazing parents. These
characteristics are not easy to acquire but are well worth it to become an
almost perfect parent.”
Summary
Exemplification means giving examples. It is simply proving or supporting
your point or thesis with examples. There are examples that illustrate,
examples that explain and examples that tell a story. Essays often combine
both brief and extended examples. Brief examples are short and concise,
while Extended examples are more complex and contain a lot more detail.
Examples are used to persuade, explain and engage. An exemplification essay
has multiple parts: 1) Introduction, 2) Body, and 3) Conclusion.
Classification
Definition of
Classification
- A classification is a division or category in a system which divides things into
groups or types.
 - Classification in writing is a method of paragraph or essay development in
which a writer arranges people, objects, or ideas with shared characteristics
into classes or groups.  Like skimming, scanning, paraphrasing, and
summarizing, classification requires the ability to group related words, ideas,
and characteristics.
 - Classification in reading, essentially, is a system of exclusive organization using
categorized examples. It also helps your readers completely understand the
subject of your paper because you have organized the things you are
considering according to a logical method.
Important Features
1. Categories
- helps writers and readers understand the larger subject.

Graphic Organizer
- are visual presentations of overall related concepts which allows the reader
and writer to analyze differences and similarities of information presented.

- Empathic Order
- a method Method of organization that places ideas in their order of
importance.

ach classification system can differ depending on what you are classifying;
are certain classification words that are conventional. Some of these are:

1. Type
2. Kind
3. Sort
4. Category
5. Group
Tips and Guidelines to
Writing
How to Write an Effective Classification Essay:
1. Determine the categories.
- Be thorough; don't leave out a critical category. For example, if you say water
sports of Hawaii include snorkeling and sailing, but leave out surfing, your essay
would be incomplete because surfing is Hawaii's most famous water sport. On
the other hand, don't include too many categories, which will blur your
classification. For example, if your topic is sports shoes, and your organizing
principle is activity, you wouldn't include high heels with running and bowling
shoes.
Tips and Guidelines to
Writing
2. Classify by a single principle.
- Once you have categories, make sure that they fit into the same organizing
principle. The organizing principle is how you sort the groups. Do not allow a
different principle to pop up unexpectedly. For example, if your unifying
principle is "tourist-oriented" water sports, don't use another unifying
principle, such as "native water sports," which would have different categories:
pearl diving, outrigger, or canoe racing.
Tips and Guidelines to
Writing
3. Support equally each category with examples.
- In general, you should write the same quantity, i.e., give the same number of
examples, for each category. The most important category, usually reserved
for last, might require more elaboration.
Summary
The importance of Classification is to break down broad subjects into
smaller, more manageable, and more specific parts that can help the writer
and reader organize and classify it’s idea characteristics and the word.
Classification also uses Categories, Graphing Organizers and Empathetic
Order in writing and reading. There are three things to remember in writing
an Effective Classification essay: (1) Determine the Categories, (2) Clasify by
a single principle, and (3) Support equally each category with examples.
