INTRODUCTION TO

SEQUENCE
MATHEMATICS 10
THE MEANING OF SEQUENCE

SEQUENCE
Is a set of numbers:
● Written in a given order
● With a pattern
● With a definite rule (usually
addition or multiplication only)
EXAMPLE OF SEQUENCE

● The DEFINITE RULE OF THE SEQUENCE IS ADD 2 (+2)

● THE FIRST TERM OF THE SEQUENCE (a1) is 3
● The formula for the sequence is 2n+3
EXAMPLE...
IDENTIFYING SEQUENCE
The is a definite rule for each term of the

2, 3, 4, 5, 6 YES sequence to be generated which is which is

ADD 1.

There is no defined rule for which the

1, 5, 7, 9, 12 NO Other terms of the sequence is generated

The is a definite rule for each term of the

3, -9, 27, -81, 243 YES sequence to be generated which is which is

MULTIPLY BY -3.
IDENTIFYING NEXT TERM OF THE SEQUENCE
85 90 95
70, 75, 80, ___, ___, ___
You can notice that the pattern of the sequence is increasing,
since we only have an ADDITION or MULTIPLICATION RULE
then we can say that the pattern for this sequence is
ADDITION.
So the pattern of the sequence is ADD by 5 (+5)
Then the next terms are...
THIRD TERM (a3) : 80 + 5 = 85
FOURTH TERM (a4) : 85 + 5 = 90
FIFTH TERM (a5) : 90 + 5 = 95
IDENTIFYING NEXT TERM OF THE SEQUENCE
40 80 160
5, 10, 20, ___, ___, ___
You can notice that the pattern of the sequence is
increasing and doubled, since we only have an ADDITION or
MULTIPLICATION RULE then we can say that the pattern
for this sequence is MULTIPLICATION.

So the pattern of the sequence is Multiply by 2 (x2)

Then the next terms are...
THIRD TERM (a3) : 20 x 2 = 40
FOURTH TERM (a4) : 40 x 2 = 80
FIFTH TERM (a5) : 80 x 2 = 160
IDENTIFYING NEXT TERM OF THE SEQUENCE
8 4 0
20, 16, 12, ___, ___, ___
You can notice that the pattern of the sequence is decreasing,
since we only have an ADDITION or MULTIPLICATION RULE
then we can say that the pattern for this sequence is
ADDITION because subtraction is the opposite of addition.
So the pattern of the sequence is ADD by -5 (-5)
Then the next terms are...
THIRD TERM (a3) : 12 + (-5) = 8
FOURTH TERM (a4) : 8 + (-5) = 4
FIFTH TERM (a5) : 4 + (-5) = -5
IDENTIFYING NEXT TERM OF THE SEQUENCE
4/5 4/25 4/125
100, 20, 4, ___, ___, ___
You can notice that the pattern of the sequence is
decreasing and halfed, since we only have an ADDITION or
MULTIPLICATION RULE then we can say that the pattern
for this sequence is MULTIPLICATION.

So the pattern of the sequence is Multiply by 1/5

en the next terms are...
THIRD TERM (a3) : 4 x 1/5 = 4/5
FOURTH TERM (a4) : 4/5 x 1/5 = 4/25
FIFTH TERM (a5) : 4/25 x 1/5 = 4/125
FINITE INFINITE
SEQUENCE SEQUENCE
FINITE AND INFINITE SEQUENCE

FINITE INFINITE
A sequence is said to be finite if it A sequence is said to be infinite if it
have its first and last term. has indefinite last term, meaning the
sequence is endless

1, 4, 7, 10, 13
The first term is 1 and the last term
4, 8, 12, 16, …..
“…….” indicates that the
is 13
sequence is infinite or continuous
FINDING
THE
NEXT TERM….
How to find the next term of the sequence given its general
formula? Find the first three term of the sequence:
1. Get the formula
2. Remember that n an=n+3
stands for the order of
Since we are asked to find the first three terms the values
the sequence for n are 1, 2 &3
● 1 for first term
● 2 for second term For n=1
an=n+3 (subtitute all n as 1)
● 3 for third term
a1=1+3
● 4 is for fourth term
a1=4
And so on...
The first term (a1)of the sequence is 4
1. Substitute the value of
n then solve
