Ms Luke- Good morning class, how is everyone today?
Students- good Ms. Luke
Ms. Luke- Wonderful, lets start todays lesson so you
may work on your projects for the rest of the class
period. We are going to be doing a project that involves
technology. You may use Google Docs or PowerPoint. I
would like you to pick your favorite artist, and create a
piece impersonating their art style without copying their
work completely. Then I would like you to create a
presentation telling me a bit about this artist. The
worksheet I'm going to give you will explain everything.
Ms. Luke- Let me give you an example of a good artist. You can’t
use him however because I already used him. Tim Burton for
example. His art style is obvious, all his characters look dead and
skinny and they have big eyes with no corneas. So, if you could do a
project about Tim burton, I expect you to do a piece with a gloomy
look to it. You can create yourself as a Tim burton character if it is
original and not a copy of the artist's work.
Any questions about that?
Student- Do you want us to show our artwork on the presentation?
Or in our hands?
Ms. Luke- Great question, you can do it either way. I will go over
how to use PowerPoint for this project and demonstrate how you can
attach
your art piece to the google doc or PowerPoint.
Ms. Luke- Any More questions? Okay, lets continue. Let me
teach you guys a little more about this artist, to give you more of
an example of what I expect to see. Following the worksheet, I
will provide.
Tim Burton is one of my favorite artists.
He was born August 25th, 1958, he is 62 years old. He is from
Burbank, California. He is still alive.
After studying at the California Institute of the Arts, he worked
in Walt Disney studios as an animator before working alone. He
got his
inspiration from popular culture, fairy tales, and gothic
traditions. He is best known for Edward Scissorhands and other
fantastic Disney movies such as Frankenweenie and The
nightmare before Christmas.
Any questions class?
Student- My mom showed me a lot of Tim Burton movies!
I didn’t know he was an artist! I thought he was just a
director
Ms. Luke- Tim burton is also a director. He directed a lot
of his movie creations.
Student- How did Tim Burton create The nightmare before
Christmas? I love that movie.
Ms. Luke- Great question. He used what is called
Claymation. All the characters are made from clay. He
made each one by hand, with help, and made them move
around using Stop motion. Which I will talk about.
Ms. Luke- Alright let's talk about some fun facts about this artist.
Tim Burton used a lot of Claymation and stop motion.
Student- what is Claymation and stop motion?
Ms. Luke- Claymation is defined as a method of animation in
which clay figures are filmed using stop motion photography.
Stop motion photography is when they move the character a
little bit, click record, then stop it, then move it again. The
process is repeated over and over. It took 3 years to create the
nightmare before Christmas.
Student- Wow! I never knew that! I want to do that for a living!
Ms. Luke- it is definitely a fascinating career choice. It takes lots
of patience. I’ll show you all some images of what it looks like.
Ms. Luke- As you can see class, this man
here is moving each clay character and
preparing them for the next recording.
Student- His back probably hurts from
doing that for a long time. It is so cool
how big the set is. It’s lie a huge doll
house!
Ms. Luke- that’s right class. Claymation is
almost like playing with dolls. In this next
picture you will see Tim Burton holding
the original characters from the iconic
movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Students- That is so cool!
Ms. Luke- another fun fact students, Mr.
Burton has his own art exhibit where you
can see the characters in person.
Student- we should go for a field trip!
Ms. Luke- I’ll see what I can do. Now let me show
you all an example of how your own art project
should look.
Student- So, You want us to create an art project that
imitates another artists art style, without copying their
artwork right?
Ms. Luke- that is correct! Here I have drawn my own
original art pieces in Tim burtons art style. As you can
see, I have a skinny dead looking girl walking in a
graveyard, and a couple self portraits of myself as a
Tim Burton style character.
Student- That is really good Ms. Luke!
Ms. Luke- Thank you! I look forward to seeing what
you all create. Make sure to add color, and really fill
out the entire page. I don’t like wasting paper here.
Student- Yes, Ms. Luke.
Ms. Luke- Your artist must be so relevant, that you will be able to
answer all those questions with ease.
I will provide a list of examples right here.
- Leonardo Davinci
- Michelangelo
- Rembrandt
- Vermeer
- Jean-Antoine Watteau
- Eugene Delacroix
- Claude Monet
- Georges Seurat
Examples And so many more. I’m sure you will find many on google.
Student- what if wee use the same artist as another student?
Ms. Luke- well if you don’t copy their information or work
together on it. Then I’ll be okay with it.
Ms. Luke- Anymore questions? Alright its very simple, now here
is the hard part, I also want you to create a project that
impersonates this artists art style.
◦ Student 1- when is this due?
◦ Ms. Luke- You will have three weeks to finish both
projects. You will present to the class on December
16th. Now, Can someone give me an example of
their favorite artist?
◦ Student 2- Frida Kahlo
◦ Ms. Luke- She is my favorite! Anyone else?
◦ Student 3- Davinci?
◦ Ms. Luke- Yes! Davinci is a great example.
◦ Student 4- Leonardo DiCaprio?
◦ Ms. Luke- Good try, he is an actor, which is a
different form of art.
◦ Student- are we allowed to use other forms of artists? Like musicians or photographers?
◦ Ms. Luke- Well although those are other forms of art, I would like for everyone to stick to painting and drawing artists only. If
your chosen artist is a painter, drawer, or sculptor, and happens to do other things as a career, that is okay.
◦ Student- What is a sculptor?
◦ Ms. Luke- A sculptor is a type of artist that makes sculptures. Such as statues and Claymations.
◦ Student- what is Claymation?
◦ Ms. Luke- Great question, I will explain this to you throughout the lesson. So, keep that question in mind, it will be answered
shortly.
Ms. Luke- Now let me show you what I am expecting to see in your
presentation.
You will be answering this worksheet to help you brainstorm what
your presentation will look like
I want to know who they are, where they are from, how long they’ve
been on planet Earth? Are they still with us? Where did they get their
inspiration from? Were they born to draw and paint? No of course not
, they must have been taught by someone. Google should be able to
tell you where or who taught them. Where did they get their
education from? Did they go to college or paint in their parents'
garage? What are they known for? Do they have a piece everyone has
seen before? An example can be the Mona Lisa, everyone has seen
the Mona Lisa before, right?
Students- YES!
Ms. Luke- fantastic, finally I want to know 5 facts you think are cool
about them and how they died.
Ms. Luke- Alright class, let me show you all how to use
PowerPoint so you better understand how to do your
own project. Does anyone have anymore questions on
Tim Burton? Or the project?
Students- No Ms. Luke.
Ms. Luke- Alright great! Let’s move on.
MS. Luke- okay so, to attach photos in
your PowerPoint, you will go into
PowerPoint, click new, then click insert
and there should be an icon that says
photos, then it will ask you if you want
to search for the photo or if you already
have it on your device. Click whatever
works for you.
For google slides, same thing, click
insert, click images and select
whichever image you would like to
insert. The same goes for text boxes. I
will show you a demonstration.
Student- Ms. Luke, what if we don’t have a computer at home to
use?
Ms. Luke- great question, this school offers many alternatives.
There are computers in the library and there is a computer in my
classroom free for you all to use. Make sure to ask me first please.
Student- Okay, thank you.
Ms. Luke- alright let me show you how to create text boxes so
you can tell the class the information in an organized manner. For
PowerPoint and google slides, You will click insert, then click text
box, which looks like this icon. Then type whatever information
you would like. You can also change the font and color if you
would like.
Student- are these software's free?
Ms. Luke- if you don’t have a Microsoft account, PowerPoint
does cost money. Unless you use the school library or the
computer in my classroom. But google slides is free.
Student- Okay thank you.
Ms. Luke- Here is an example of
how to get a text box in google
slides.
Student- that’s easy!
Ms. Luke- yes, very simple. Now students, you will be presenting
your presentation to the entire class in two weeks. While students
present, you will be filling out a reflection sheet. It will ask you a
series of questions of what you learned about 3 students projects.
So, make sure to pay close attention.
Student- What if we are absent the day we present?
Ms. Luke- no problem, just try let me know in advance and we
will figure out a day for you to present. If you are absent for the
reflections sheet, Its okay if you have a valid excuse.
Now let me show you what to expect on the reflections sheet.
Ms. Luke- alright, in this reflections sheet,
it is going to ask you a series of questions.
It is going to require you to listen.
Student- is this also apart of our grade?
Ms. Luke- Yes, so make sure you pay
close attention and feel free to ask
questions.
Okay so I want you to list their name, what
kind of artist they are, and 3 fun facts
about them. Okay?
Students- Yes, Ms. Luke
Great!
Ms. Luke- Are there any more questions?
Students- No Ms. Luke
Ms. Luke- Okay great, get started on your brainstorming worksheets and let me know if
you have any questions about your artist. Feel free to use your phones for research and
make sure to start your physical projects today as well. Paint and brushes are in the back.
Assistive learning student- What should I do?
Ms. Luke- For you, I want you to paint me a picture of someone that makes you happy. You
don’t have to present if you aren’t comfortable. I want you to make
A nice picture of whatever makes you happy. Feel free to
Use any of the supplies in the back.
Ms. Luke- alright just for review to make sure everyone understands
what I am expecting.
I want everyone to make a presentation about their artist containing
all the information from you brainstorming worksheet that I want
you to fill out. Also, make sure to show me by the end of the period
your brainstorming worksheets so I can mark it for a grade. Then I
want you to work on your own art piece that imitates that artists
work, without copying it. When we present these projects on the 16th
and probably the 17th, you will all fill out your reflections sheet and
turn everything in for grading.
Any questions?
Students- No Ms. Luke.
Ms. Luke- great! I hope you all have a wonderful day! You may
come to me if you produce any further questions. See you all next
time.
