considered newsworthy or important.

ITEM?
The generic structure of a News Item are as such:
a. Newsworthy event: Presents the main
newsworthy event.

b. Background event/Elaboration: Gives further


explanation concerning the main event.

c. Sources/Resource of information: Is the


official statement from the expert or the
authority which strengthens the news of the main
event.
WHAT ARE THE LANGUAGE FEAUTURES OF A
NEWS ITEM?
Some language features that you can follow to
make a News Item text are as follow:

1. Focusing on circumstances.
2. Using material processes.
3. Short, telegraphic information about story
captured in headline.
4. Using action verbs.
5. Using saying verbs: (e.g.“...”, She said,
informed, told, reported.
6. Using adverbs: time, place, and manner.
EXAMPLE OF A NEWS ITEM
Heres an example of a News Item text and it’s generic structure:

A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence of another Soviet nuclear


catastrophe in Moscow, which had killed 10 sailors and contaminated an
entire town. Velena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to the
people who witnessed the explosion of a nuclear submarine at the nava
base of shkotovo – 22 near Vladivostock. The accident, which occurred 13
months before the Chaernobyl disaster spread radioactive fallout over the
base and nearby town, but was covered up by officials of the Soviet

investigators was later to describe it as the worst accident in the history of
the Soviet Navy.
