1. Introduction to Casting

Es un MANUFACTURING PROCESS en el que generalmente se vierte un material

líquido en un molde, que contiene una cavidad hueca de la forma deseada, y luego se deja
solidificar.

Characteristics:
- No size limitation: 2000 toneladas
- No shape limitation: turbine blades, jewels
- No engineering material limitation: plastic, metals ferrous and no ferrous

Limitations:
- Flat Surface. no se puede crear superficies esféricas
correctas
Split piece Pattern
- No hollow shapes: Core design
- Surface defects: gating elements

Types of patterns:

1) Solid or single piece pattern --- one surface should be flat

2) Split piece pattern--- dowel pins

3) Loose piece pattern--- Used when projections and undercuts present

4) Gated pattern--- No need to cut runner and gate

5) Match plate pattern--- Complex shapes, mass production

6) Sweep pattern--- 2D pattern-- 3D cavity

Moulding Sand:

Silica melting point=1710°C

Silica -- 70 - 80%

Clay -- 10 - 20% --- Bentonite, Calonite

Water -- 2 - 8% --- to increase plasticity

Additives -- 1-6%
Properties of Moulding:

1) Refractoriness
2) Flow ability
3) Cohesive
4) Adhesive
5) Collapsibility
6) Hardness
7) Strength
8) permeability
Additives:

1) Sawdust or wood floor----- Collapsibility, permeability

2) Linseed oil, molasses, dextrin ----- strength and hardness
3) Coal dust ----- surface finish

Chills:

A CHILL is an object used to promote solidification in a

specific portion of a metal casting mold.
