TUTORIAL 2

1. An object, originally at the point (2, 5, 1) cm is given a displacement

8𝑖̂– 2𝑗̂ + 4𝑘̂ cm. Find the coordinates of its new position.

2. Find the displacement vector from the point (0, 3, – 1) m to point (– 2, 6, 4) m. Give
your answer in 𝑖̂, 𝑗̂ and 𝑘̂ notation. Also calculate the magnitude of the displacement.

3. Find the components of a displacement which when added to a displacement of

(7𝑖̂ – 4𝑗̂) m will give a resultant displacement of (5𝑖̂ – 3𝑗̂) m.

4. Determine the resultant of the three forces shown in the Figure 1.

5. Two forces F1 and F2 act on a body such the total force F3 has a magnitude of 300 N
at 30° east of north. If F1 has magnitude 120 N at 15° west of north. Determine the
magnitude and direction of F2.

6. Vector A and B are in the xy-plane. If A is 70 N at 90° and B is 120 N at 210°

(90° and 120° relative to x-axes), find
a) A – B
b) Vector C such that A – B + C = 0
c) A × C

7. Given that the components of P are 𝑃𝑥 = 4m, 𝑃𝑦 = 5m and 𝑃𝑧 = 3m and components

of Q are 𝑄𝑥 = −3m, 𝑄𝑦 = 5m and 𝑄𝑧 = −4m. Find
a) P ∙Q
b) P × Q
c) the angle between P and Q.

8. Figure 2 shows two forces F1 and F2 acting on a wooden block of mass, m kg.
a) Net force acting on the block and its direction?
b) Choose the possible direction of motion of the block

9. Figure 3 shows a vector R with magnitude 8, making angles of 27°, 85° and 64° with
the positive x-, y- and z-direction respectively. Express R in component form

10. A vector makes angles of 66°, and 53° with the positive x- and y-directions
respectively. Find the angle that it makes with the z-direction.

11. A graphic artist is creating a new logo for her company’s website. In the graphics
program she is using, each pixel in an image file has coordinates (x, y), where the
origin (0, 0) is at the upper left corner of the image, the +x-axis points to the right,
and the +y-axis point down. Distances are measured in pixels.
a) The artist draws a line from the pixel location (10, 20) to the location (210, 200).
She wishes to draw a second line that starts at (10, 20), is 250 pixels long, and is at
angle 30° measured clockwise from the first line. At which pixel location should this
second line end? Give your answer to the nearest pixel.
b) The artist now draws an arrow that connects the lower right end of the first line
to the lower right end of the second line. Find the length and direction of this arrow.
Draw a diagram showing all three lines.

12. The work done by a force, F when the displacement of its point of application is s is
given by the scalar product of F and s. Find work done for each cases.
