Q.

In what ways does your media product

use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
• For the final project, our group chose to create the
opening two minutes of an action film.
• I believe that we met the conventions of this genre
throughout most of the filming and editing.
• Our clip is fast paced and action packed in both the
shots we chose and the editing we used, typical of an
action genre film.
• The next few slides are screenshots from our film
where we both met and challenged the conventions.
This is a shot from our film opening, it shows
the main character (the antagonist) on the
floor, this shows that he is weak. This is
unusual in action films as the antagonist is
usually in a position of power and isn’t ever
seen as weak.

This is a shot from the film ‘Karate Kid’ and it

shows the antagonist in a similar less
powerful position, we got our inspiration for
this shot from this film, and although we did
it slightly different it is still similar. If we were
to re-film our project I would include this
shot
This is one of the shots from our film, in this
particular clip the antagonist is having a
flashback, when we were filming the
flashback we put the camera in the corner
of the room so it looks like a CCTV camera,
and in the editing we added a grainy sound
effect and made the screen have a greenish
tinge so it was obvious that he was having a
flashback.

We got the idea for our flashbacks from

the video game ‘call of duty: black ops’ it
uses similar editing. It uses the same
diegetic sound of ‘screeching’ and also
has a greeny tinge like the effect we used
in our film.
The previous slides are of shots where we have got our inspiration from shots in other
films, and have stuck with the conventions but this is a shot I feel is one which is quite
original, in my research I couldn’t find another point of view shot of someone going
down the stairs. I feel this shot works well as the shot cuts from a point of view shot, to a
mid shot and then back to a point of view shot.
Q.2

How does your media product

represent particular social groups?
The main character in our film, the (protagonist) is an Asian male, this is unusual
and goes against the conventions of the genre as the protagonist is usually not an
ethnic minority and is usually a white man from either England or USA. The types
of films where an ethnic minority may have the starring role are smaller low
budget films and foreign language movies.
Q.3

What kind of media institution might

distribute your media product and
why?
In my research I looked at the films: The Fighter, The Mechanic and The Green Hornet.
If we were to make our film, I would want similar production value and success
that these films had. The Green Hornet had a budget of $120,000,000 and was
distributed by Columbia pictures, The Mechanic was distributed by Lionsgate and
Momentum Pictures and the Fighter was distributed by Paramount Pictures. The
reason that I would want our film to be distributed by these more successful
companies is because these companies already have connections in the film
industry and they have the funding to get their films into cinemas and viewed by
audiences.
