The Cooperative Principle November 26th 2021
The cooperative principle is when participants expect

that each will make a “conversational contribution
such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by
the accepted purpose or direction of the talk
exchange.”
H.P. Grice (1975)

• Make your contribution as informative as is

required.
• Do not make your contribution more informative
than is required.
Maxims: Quantity
• "How do I get from here to the library?"

• “Keep walking straight until you reach the
intersection, and then turn right.”
• "Keep walking."

• Try to make your contribution one

that is true.
• Do not say what you believe to be

false.
• Do not say that for which you lack
evidence.

• "Do you think that marihuana cure

diseases?"
• "No, I think marihuana doesn’t cure

Hedging is a technique in communication

which speakers employ in their utterances to
‘soften’ their magnitude of their speeches.
(Nikula; 1997, p.188)

Example: "It may be said that the commitment to

some of the social and economic concepts was less
strong than it is now."

Irony is a means to criticize something

or someone by using soft language.
Irony called as a result of violating
cooperative principle since it doesn’t
tell something true.

Example: "I know that your voice is good

but it is better for you to keep silence."

Sarcasm is a means to criticize

something or someone by using Hard
Language. Sarcasm violets all maxims
(manner, quality, quantity, and relation).

Exampe: "Wow, Nice perfume!

Did you swim on it last night?"
Sarcasm
Humor is a means to make someone feel happy

through the expressions or utterances. Humor
called as a result of violating cooperative
principle since it doesn’t express something
explicitly. Means that it violates maxims of
quality and quantity as well.

Example: "Remember, you're someone's

reason to smile, because you are a joke."

The speaker communicates meaning via

implicature and the listener recognizes
communicated meaning via inference.
Conversational Implicature
• Jim Halpert : "I don't think I'll be here in 10 years."

• Jim Halpert : "That's what who said?"
• Michael Scott : "I never know, I just say it. I say stuff like that,
you know—to lighten the tension when things sort of get
hard."

When no special background

knowledge of the context is required in
order to calculate the additional
conveyed meaning.

Certain information is always

communicated by choosing a word
which express one value from a scale of
value.
Scalar Implicature
X: "She won't necessarily get the

job."
-> She will possibly get the job.
Scalar Implicature
They occur in conversation but, they don’t

depend on special context for this
interpretation.
Conventional Implicature
Example: "My lecturer was 75 years old, but he still

had a good thinking and still looked fresh."
-> Usually a person of 75 years Old can’t think well
and doesn’t look fresh.
