ETHOS
 MEANING
o The characteristic spirit of a culture, era, or community as manifested in its attitudes and aspirations.
 WHAT IS ETHOS ?
o Ethos shares a root with the word "ethics." This is helpful to remember because speakers often try to establish
their own strong moral character by using ethos.
 HOW IS ETHOS USED IN BUILDING ARGUMENTS ?
o Phronesis: Sound reasoning, and relevant experience or expertise
o Arete: Moral character
o Eunoia: Good intentions towards the audience.
 WHY DO WRITERS USE ETHOS
o Politicians, activists, and advertisers use ethos because they recognize that it is impossible to convince an
audience of anything if its members do not believe in the speaker's credibility, morality, or authority.
 EXAMPLES OF ETHOS
o Bank manager trust the customer and approved his loan because the customer has good education and aslo a
stable job.
LOGOS
 WHAT IS LOGOS
o Logos is a word which is related to the word logic, this means plan or reason.
 DEFINITION OF LOGOS
o This ties in perfectly with how logos functions as it is one of the three different types of persuasion which
were set out by Aristotle.
o In simple terms, logos is a type of persuasion which appeals to people logic, therefore making it very effective
during an argument or debate.
 HOW IS LOGOS USED IN BUILDING ARGUMENTS ?
o We have likely seen logos being used in our day to day conversations many times without even realising it.
o Whenever we take part in or hear an argument in which the speaker is using logic to make their point- we are
hearing logos in use.
 EXAMPLES OF LOGOS
o Bank manager needs the documents to issue a loan like the pay slip and all. the manager must make sure that
the customer has no arrears in past
PATHOS

 WHAT IS PATHOS
o Pathos is an appeal made to an audience’s emotions in order to evoke pity feeling.
 WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS OF PATHOS ?
o Pathos is orginally a greek word meaning “ suffering” or “ experience”.
o The concept of pathos originated with the Greek Philosopher Aristotle.
o Aristotle writes that pathos is a means of awakening people’s emotions in order to sway their opinion towards that of
the speaker.
 HOW IS PATHOS USED IN BUILDING ARGUMENTS ?
Using pathos is a very common tactic in argument or persuasion. Appealing to emotion can be a very effective
means of sharing your frame of mind and persuading your audience to agree with your point of view. Example
of pathos in persuasion or debate include :
o Court room. A defense attorney describes her clients’s tough upbringing in order to evoke sympathy from a
jury.
o Politics. A politician tells the story of a struggling single parent whose life would be positively impacted by
a policy the politician is advocating.
 IMPORTANCE OF PATHOS
Emotions are motivators so the audience is more likely to be persuaded and act on your request by using
pathos. Pathos is more likely to increase the chances of your audience:
o Understanding your point of view
o Accepting your arguments
o Acting on your requests.
