Introduction
• Adolescence is a period of rapid growth and
body developments, and nutrients requirements
increase.
Definition of Key terms
• Nutrition: The study of nutrients and their relationship with food
and living things.
• Energy: Required for all metabolic reactions
• Calories: A calorie is a unit of energy
• Activity level: Activity level is a number used to express how
physically active someone's lifestyle is
• Energy level: a comparative level of capacity for vigorous activity
• Anemia: Anemia occurs when there are not enough healthy red
blood cells to carry oxygen to your body's organs
Definition of Key terms
• Diet: The food a person normally eats everyday that helps
improve or maintain health
• ‘Junk food’: pre-prepared or packaged food that has low
nutritional value.
• Meal plans: The preparation of the individual needs in
according to their gender, age etc.
Nutritional Requirements
• Adolescents require additional calories to provide energy
for growth and development. This is a significant increase
from childhood requirements .Specific nutritional
requirements vary with gender, body size, and activity
level . Most adolescent boys have a high energy level, that
is why they are often hungry and eat large quantities of
food. Iron particularly for girls to prevent developing
anemia at the onset of menstruation and protein for boys
to develop lean muscle mass.
Suitable foods for each group
• To meet those calorie needs, teens should choose a
variety of healthy foods such as: Lean protein
sources, low-fat dairy products, wholegrains, fruit
and vegetables. The diet must be sufficient in iron
and protein. Plenty of calcium rich foods and
vitamin D should be consumed, as 45% of the
adult-sized skeleton forms during adolescence
.Teens should avoid eating too much ‘Junk food’
Some suitable snacks for teens are:
•Fresh fruit- Apples, bananas
•Raw vegetables- Carrots, broccoli
•Dairy- Yogurt, milk
