Equipment Modeling Overview
The purpose of this document is to provide SP3D modeling steps to beginner. After go
through with this presentation, the user will be able to rendered three dimensional model
in SP3D. It also provide information regarding different equipment modeling task like
insert equipment components, ports, and geometric shapes etc. during design.

The following tasks are commonly performed in the Equipment and Furnishings
environment:

•Place equipment : You can interactively place equipment from the SP3D. More details can be
added to the equipment by adding primitive geometric shapes, nozzles, and access steel
(platforms, ladders, handrails) with equipment.

•Build customized equipment: You can build designed equipment by using primitive geometric
shapes. You can also design or place equipment components.

•Set positioning relationships: You can create a positioning relationship among the placed
equipment and other surfaces or reference geometry that you select.

• Manipulate equipment: You can copy, move, rotate, and delete equipment in the equipment
and Furnishings environment.

Equipment Modeling Overview
Steps for Creating a Session File:
Create a session file and save the file in system or in your desktop.
• Start SP3D software by clicking Start > Programs > Intergraph SmartPlant 3D >.
• The New dialog box is displayed and the empty template is selected by default.
• Select any template options other than empty and click OK.
• Administrators can use the empty template to create custom templates.
• The English Units template displays measurements in the English system, and the
Metric Units template displays measurements in the Metric system.

Equipment Manipulating Views
Steps Manipulating Views:
•You can manipulate the graphic windows and the view in the windows either by Window
or View menu and by the commands on the Common toolbar.

Steps Manipulating Views:

•Clip by Object : Creates a rectangular volume based on the maximum range of the selected
objects and then limits or clips the display to show only graphics within that clipping volume.
•Clip by Volume : Creates a clipping volume by specifying two area definition points (the
cross-section of the volume) and two depth points (the extent of the volume).
•Clear View Clipping : Removes all clipping of the display from the active window.
•Active View Control : Enables you to graphically edit the parameters of the view, including
the clipping by showing active view’s eye point, focus point, and viewing volume in another
view and allowing you to manipulate them.
•Common Views : Displays a small window that sets the view direction of the active view
when you click one of the standard viewing angles.
•View by Points : Defines the viewing plane by three points.
•Rotate View : Rotates a view about a point or an axis.
•Named Views : Assigns a name and a description to a view and stores the definition for later
reuse. The default views are Top, Front, Right, and Isometric.

9
Equipment Manipulating Views
Steps for Manipulate Views in the Active Window:
The following activity uses the view manipulation commands in a workspace
containing the entire Training Plant.

• Click the Common Views button on the Common toolbar. The Common Views dialog
box appears.

12
Equipment Common Task
Steps for Placing Equipment:
You can browse the available Catalog equipment by selecting the Place Equipment
command on the vertical toolbar. With a piece of equipment selected, click the
Preview button in the Select Equipment dialog box to see a picture of the equipment
geometry. You can pick a piece of equipment from the Select Equipment dialog box
and click the Properties button to view the properties of the selected equipment in the
Part Properties dialog box. If the equipment has ports, you
will see the Connections tab in the Part
Properties dialog box. You then can view the
properties of each port by selecting the port
from a drop-down list.

13
Equipment Common Task
Steps for Placing Equipment Components:
You can browse the available Catalog of equipment component by selecting the Place
Equipment Component command on the vertical toolbar. With an equipment
component selected, click the Preview button in the Select Equipment Component
dialog box to see a picture of the equipment component geometry. The port locations,
if any, are also shown in the pictures.
