Theory of failures

and selection of materials

What is a tensor ?

• a mathematical object analogous to but more general than a vector,

represented by an array of components that are functions of the
coordinates of a space.
Coordinate Axes
Tensors of Rank 2
Why study Tensors?
• Tensors are a powerful representation of any quantity acting on an
object that enables us to have a better understanding on how that
quantity affects that object.

• It is useful in determining the various applications of materials

• It gives us a good idea on how much deformation we can achieve with

the said material
Theory of failures

• Tresca Criterion

• Von Mises Criterion

Tresca Criterion
Von-Mises Criterion
Von-Mises Yield Curve
Selection of materials using Theory of
Failures
• By Von Mises and Tresca Criterion it is easier to determine the various
applications of materials based on their yield area in their respective
curves.
• Amount of deformation and super plasticity can also be determined
using Theory of Failures as well as the Power Rule
